The English giants could opt to end the superstar's contract early, as the incoming manager may have different ideas of how his attack should look.

It seems that the heralded reunion between Cristiano Ronaldo and Manchester United may be coming to an end rather prematurely.

The 37-year-old superstar made a huge return back to Old Trafford at the start of last season, and despite scoring 18 goals in 30-plus appearances across all comps for the Red Devils, all may not be going as swimmingly as expected.

Ronaldo cut a very frustrated figure during Manchester United's surprise 1-0 loss to Everton last weekend, and now is reportedly the subject of a police investigation after he lashed out at a young Everton fan, with some reports claiming he broke the kid's phone in the process.

With Erik ten Tag being the apparent front runner to take over, it's claimed that Manchester United and the player could come to a "mutual agreement" to terminate his contract at the end of this season. That's because the Dutch tactician's style of playing may not suit the experienced striker.

Although Ronaldo's contract is until June 2023, with a possibility to extend until 2024, there are additional reasons for both parties to part ways early.

One is the Champions League. Manchester United crashed out early after a disappointing loss to Atletico Madrid, and having won just one of their last five games, their chances at qualifying for fourth become slimmer by the day.

With Tottenham, who presently occupy fourth enjoying a six point lead thanks to their purple patch of form, as well as West Ham still hoping to have a shout at fourth despite their inconsistent showings lately, Manchester United could be facing the prospect of having to settle for Europa League football next season.

And playing in European club football's second-tier competition isn't likely to be something that will be especially palatable to Cristiano, who's enjoyed unprecedented success in the Champions League to the point that some fans have even nicknamed him "Mr. Champions League".

It will be interesting to see what will be next for CR7 after this season, as he's clearly not ready to retire just yet. Having already played in three of Europe's "Big Five" leagues: Premier League, La Liga, and Serie A, could a move to Ligue 1 be on the cards? Or will he try his luck in the USA with MLS?
