Plenty of goals were scored this past weekend in the Premier League, but depending on what team you support you were probably either quite happy or quite disappointed with some of the matches' outcomes.

After another interruption due to more international fixtures, the Premier League resumed action this weekend, with plenty of talking points from the ten games played over the past few days.

Here's a quick summary of what went down this weekend across England's top flight.

Premier League headlines, stats, and other facts

Chelsea set records...for all the wrong reasons: It was a nightmare day at the office for Chelsea, who were on the wrong end of a 4-1 drubbing by Brentford over the weekend. Prior to this loss, Chelsea were not only unbeaten in their last 17 games at Stamford Bridge, but also were seeking to make it a seventh straight win across all comps. An early second half goal from Antonio Rudiger had fans thinking that all was well, only to see things suddenly go horribly wrong. By the time the dust settled, Chelsea had set all sorts of records that they'd rather forget, including this one:

A day to remember for Christian Eriksen: The Danish star marked his return to football with a well-deserved goal, as he netted the second of Brentford's efforts to put the Bees ahead shortly after the second half began. It's been an amazing turnaround for Eriksen, who also previously played for Inter and Tottenham, following his collapse during last summer's EURO 2020 tournament, especially considering that there were widespread fears and concern that he'd never be able to play football again.

A very disappointing record for Ashley Young: The veteran defender, now on the books at Aston Villa had a day to forget as his side lost 2-1 to Wolves. Unfortunately for him, his own goal ended up ultimately tipping the balance in favor of Wolves. It not only was the first time Young had put the ball in the back of his own net (after nearly 390 Premier League appearances), but he's now the oldest own goal scorer (at 36 years and 276 days) in Aston Villa club history.

Five star Spurs now in serious contention for Champions League football: Having had to feature in the Europa Conference League - and with disappointing results - it's safe to say that Tottenham will naturally be aiming higher for the next season. Thanks to an impressive surge in form that has seen them win four of their last five games, Antonio Conte's side have now risen to fourth in the table, helped by their 5-1 demolition show against Newcastle that had five different players grab himself a goal.

Vieira comes back to haunt Arsenal: There were quite a few Gunners fans celebrating following Chelsea's loss and Manchester United's failure to pick up three points, as many felt that a door had been opened for Arsenal to snatch a top four spot. However, they were brought crashing back down to earth as Patrick Vieira's Crystal Palace cruised to a comfortable 3-0 win, thus denting Arsenal's hopes of securing a place in next season's Champions League.

Once they go ahead, it's pretty (near) impossible to stop City: Man City rebounded well this past weekend, recording a 2-0 win over Burnley to ensure that they stay on top of the Premier League table. It was a much needed win for Pep Guardiola's side, who were in danger of surrendering top spot after drawing Crystal Palace prior to the international break and Liverpool beating Watford earlier in the day. Once ahead, though, it seems like it's pretty impossible to prevent City from winning, as this stat shows, and it's something that surely Liverpool will keep in mind ahead of their huge clash with the league leaders this weekend:

Top Premier League matches: April 8 - April 10, 2022

Everton vs Manchester United: Both teams will come into this contest having experienced very frustrating results in their matches against West Ham and Leicester respectively. For Everton, who are facing a desperate battle to avoid being dragged down into the relegation zone, every point will be absolutely crucial if they wish to stay afloat. As for Manchester United, time is running out for the Red Devils if they want to secure Champions League football for next season after a series of disappointing results, the most recent being a one-all draw with Leicester at Old Trafford last weekend.

Arsenal vs Brighton: After a 3-0 thorough beating by Crystal Palace on the road, Arsenal will be naturally desperate to get back to winning ways when they host Brighton. Although they do have a couple of games in hand, the Gunners aren't guaranteed to secure a top four berth especially with Tottenham, West Ham, and Manchester United all still in contention for fourth spot. Noneetheless, they'll hope to get things right when they host a Brighton side who have picked up just one point from their last five games.

Southampton vs Chelsea: It's set to be a very busy week for Chelsea, who will face Southampton a few days after taking on Real Madrid in the first leg of their quarter-finals tie. The Blues will obviously look to get back on track after a humiliating and shocking 4-1 loss to Brentford at Stamford Bridge last round, especially considering that their grip on third isn't as solid as they would like.

Aston Villa vs Tottenham: Fresh off their 5-1 thrashing of Newcastle last weekend, Tottenham, who have no European matches to concern themselves with, will next face Aston Villa on the road. Conte's side have enjoyed a purple patch of form lately, with four wins from their last five games as they look to chase down a Champions League football spot, and they could certainly put some major pressure on Chelsea with a win against an Aston Villa side who've lost their last three league games.

Manchester City vs Liverpool: This will the game of this round, without a shadow of a doubt. For starters, it will pit the two top teams against each other in a game that could ultimately decide who's crowned champions of England at the end of the season. That's because only one point separates current league leaders Manchester City from Liverpool, who have closed the gap thanks to an impressive unbeaten streak that has seen the Reds fail to win just one Premier League game in 2022 (and that was a 2-2 draw with Chelsea on January 2nd).
