World Cup Qualifying: Mexico vs El Salvador

How to watch Mexico vs El Salvador in CONCACAF's World Cup Qualifiers

March 30, 2022 By Oscar Rojas
The Mexican side is one point away from claiming a spot in the World Cup, but after an inconsistent campaign, their fans will only calm down with a win.

Mexico will put an end to their run in the CONCACAF World Cup Qualifiers this Wednesday with their clash against El Salvador, a team that has been eliminated from the race to reach the World Cup but that is quite eager to leave a lasting impression in their visit to Azteca Stadium.

Mexico are currently third in the Qualifiers with one game left, and only a catastrophic loss to El Salvador here could see them fight for a spot in the World Cup via an intercontinental playoff. Meanwhile, El Salvador are ranked sixth with ten points, far from World Cup ticket contention and too close to the last teams in the Octagonal.

Mexico enter this game with no losses in their last five games, which include away wins against Jamaica and Honduras. Their only win at Azteca Stadium came against Panama back in February, while their matches against Costa Rica and the USMNT ended in goalless draws. These numbers seem to favor Mexico's hopes for success here, but their strikers' poor form in recent games has made fans wonder if coach Gerardo Martino should shake things up here. El Tri will be facing Los Cuscatlecos without Atlético Madrid midfielder Héctor Herrera, who asked for permission to leave the squad so he could join his club earlier than expected. Other than that, their Argentine boss will have a full squad to choose from.

On the other hand, El Salvador enter Azteca Stadium with only one win in their last five games. Out of those matches, Hugo Pérez's men lost twice, against Costa Rica (2-1) and when they faced the USMNT (1-0). Their only win during that run came while playing away from home, which hints that their performance at the legendary venue may not be as easy as the hosts might expect. Coach Hugo Pérez will have every men in his squad available for this match, which is a good thing to keep in mind considering the number of players that decided to snub their national team since they had no chance of making it to the World Cup.

History between these teams has shown that their games always have something that keeps fans glued to their seats. Have a look at some of the key aspects of a decisive game for Mexico and what could be the start of something interesting for the Central American side.
