Costa Rica aims to defeat the USMNT at home on Wednesday, with hopes that El Salvador upsets Mexico in Estadio Azteca. Depending on the number of goals scored in each game, Costa Rica could seal direct qualification and avoid playing an intercontinental playoff.

As it stands, Canada sealed qualification after a 4-0 win against Jamaica, the USA is pretty much in the World Cup – Costa Rica would have to beat them 10-0 – after taking down Panama 5-1, Mexico is tied with the U.S. in points – 25 – but only have a goal differential of seven goals and Costa Rica are in the playoff spot with 22 points.

Los Ticos arrive at the last game of the Octagonal undefeated in their last six games, defeating Canada, El Salvador, Honduras, Jamaica and Panama, and drawing against Mexico at Estadio Azteca. The Costa Ricans turned around what looked like a catastrophic CONCACAF qualifying run into an unforgettable undefeated spree to end the competition. Now, their goal is to win against an American team that does not have much to play for and hope that El Salvador miraculously takes down Mexico in Ciudad de Mexico.
