The Peruvian side will now have to wait until the final matchday to secure their spot in the intercontinental playoffs.

One of the big games left to be played in the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers for CONMEBOL featured Uruguay hosting Peru, and the game did not disappoint due to the intensity both teams showed during the match. Nevertheless, there was a massive controversy at the end of the game that may have tainted Uruguay's one-nil win that gave them the ticket to play in the FIFA World Cup.

As the match entered stoppage time, Peru tried desperately to level the score with a number of long balls and crosses. One of those crosses made its way inside Uruguay's box, and when Uruguayan goalie Sergio Rochet caught the ball, it seemed that he was unable to keep the ball from crossing the line.

The players led by Ricardo Gareca desperately asked for VAR's intervention, but the ref decided to end the match without checking the replay, sparking controversy among fans and experts.

"The controversy of the evening in Montevideo! Uruguay have qualified to the FIFA World Cup, but they had to suffer due to this action by Rochet in the dying moments of the game. The ref's watch did not make any sound and VAR did not intervene. Was it a goal or not?"
