FIFA World Cup Qualifying has reached its apex, as nations from around the globe prepare to play their most important games of the campaign. Six CONMEBOL sides will fight for two direct qualification spots – third and fourth – and one intercontinental playoff spot – fifth. Learn how you can watch Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Uruguay battle it out to seal the final spots in Qatar 2022.

South American giants Brazil and Argentina enter the final two CONMEBOL World Cup Qualifying matches to fight for pride. The two nations qualified for the 2022 FIFA World Cup months ago, and both sides remain undefeated in the competition. Brazil enters Matchday 17 with 39 points after 12 wins and three draws. Meanwhile, Argentina arrives at the final stage of the qualifying tournament with 35 points after ten wins and five draws.

Now, all eyes are on the middle of the pack. With Paraguay – 13 points – and Venezuela – 10 points – already out of the picture, it all comes down to Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Uruguay.

Ecuador – 3rd place, 25 points

Ecuador has the best chances of clinching a spot in Qatar 2022, sitting under Brazil and Argentina with 25 points. Ecuadorians need one point from an away game at Paraguay or a home game against Argentina to reach the biggest stage.

Uruguay – 4th place, 22 points

Uruguay has a couple of tricky games at hand. First, La Celeste faces Peru at home. Lastly, they travel to Santiago to take on Chile.

The foremost of the two matches is the most important, given that Peru is just one point behind Uruguay. A win would be vital for Diego Alonso’s side if they wish to earn direct qualification for the World Cup. A draw could potentially see them fighting for the intercontinental playoff spot. A loss would make Uruguay fight for survival on the final matchday against Chile.

Peru – 5th place, 21 points

Peru carries good form heading into the final two matchdays of World Cup Qualifying, retrieving 10 of its last 15 possible points. Only Argentina and Brazil have collected more points in the previous five matchdays.

Peruvian fans hope the national team continues to deliver on the pitch, as it has in the latter half of the competition. A win against Uruguay would give Peru a solid chance to secure direct qualification. A draw or loss, on the other hand, would leave Peru fighting against Paraguay for direct qualification or a chance to battle one last time in the intercontinental playoff.

Chile – 6th place, 19 points

Out of the six teams in contention, Chile has the most difficult last two World Cup Qualifying matches. Chileans will first face off against Brazil in the Maracana, and then host Uruguay in Santiago.

Chile fell to both sides earlier in the qualifiers. Brazil took down Chile 1-0 in Santiago and Uruguay beat Chile 2-1 thanks to a Maximiliano Gomez goal in added time. All in all, Chile could theoretically qualify by winning one game. Of course, Chile would have to beat Uruguay, and La Celeste would have to draw or lose against Peru. A win and a draw would be ideal for Chile, elevating the chances of getting out alive.

Colombia – 7th place, 17 points

Colombia is not in the most comfortable position now. However, Colombians have not lost all hope given that they face 8th place Bolivia in Barranquilla and 10th place Venezuela in Puerto Ordaz. Winning both games is a must, and even then, Colombia needs Uruguay, Peru and Chile to drop points to make its six points count.

Bolivia – 8th place, 15 points

Bolivia’s chances of making the 2022 World Cup are slim. Not only does La Verde have to play against Colombia in Barranquilla, but then they host Brazil in the qualifying finale. Bolivia only retrieved two points from eight away games, drawing against Paraguay in late 2020 and Chile in early 2021.

Bolivia can only secure a fifth-place finish, which would qualify the nation to an intercontinental playoff. However, Cesar Farias’ side needs to win all six points and score many goals in the final two games. They play away against Colombia in Barranquilla and at home against Brazil. On top of that, Bolivia needs Peru to lose against Uruguay and Paraguay and Chile to at the most draw against both Brazil and Uruguay and Colombia.
