Ligue 1 round-up: Monaco's Ben Yedder and Marseille enjoy weekend wins on Matchday 29

March 23, 2022 By Ali M.
PSG suffered an embarrassing 3-0 win at Monaco while Jorge Sampaoli's men enjoyed a brilliant 2-1 triumph over Nice amid their heated battle for a UEFA Champions League spot.

The international break is here, meaning the recent round in Ligue 1 was the final until early next month. Can't wait for the French top-flight to resume action? Until then, reminisce in the standout headlines from Matchday 29 as the likes of Marseille and Rennes secured crucial victories.

Jorge Sampaoli's men hosted Nice, their biggest rival for the UEFA Champions League spot, with the French giants marching to a crucial 2-1 victory over Christophe Galtier's side. Rennes, meanwhile, smashed Metz 6-1 and thus climbed to third in the table.

What about PSG? The league leaders took on bitter rivals Monaco on Sunday with the sole aim of securing bragging rights, but Pochettino's men unfortunately crumbled in the face of Ben Yedder and Co, losing 3-0. Here's everything you need to know about the recent matchday in Ligue 1.

  • St-Etienne kicked off the recent round on Friday with a clash against Troyes, and despite going a goal down against the visitors, Pascal Dupraz's side managed to claw back and pick up a point thanks to a Boudebouz equalizer. This was the eighth point Sainté Les Verts have picked up from a losing position in Ligue 1 in 2022, more than any other French top-flight side in this calendar year.

  • Monaco enjoyed a brilliant 3-0 victory over bitter rivals PSG over the weekend, with Wissam Ben Yedder netting a lovely brace in that victory, setting a few milestones along the way. First of all, the Frenchman took his goal involvement this season to 20, the sixth time this has occurred in the last 10 Ligue 1 seasons, with only Kylian Mbappe matching this feat. Additionally, the second of his two goals came from a spot kick, with that being his 26th penalty goal in Ligue 1 (20 at Monaco, six at Toulouse), the most by any player in this century.

  • In one of the most impressive feats witnessed in recent Ligue 1 memory, Montpellier pulled off a 2-0 victory over Bordeaux despite having two players sent off before half-time. This is the first time in 30 years that a club won a game without conceding a goal despite picking up two red cards in the first half!

  • Marseille took on Nice on Sunday in one of the standout games, with Sampaoli's men securing a crucial 2-1 victory amid their heated battle for the second and final UEFA Champions League slot. Cédric Bakambu, who came on as a sub, doubling the home side's lead, which turned out to be crucial as the visitors grabbed a late goal. The 30-year-old needed only 110 seconds to find the net after coming on, becoming the fastest Marseille player to score as a sub since Kostas Mitroglou in March 2018 (35 seconds).

Top matches to watch in Ligue 1: April 2-3, 2022

Nice vs Rennes: A lot is riding on this game. Nice were in the UEFA Champions League spot not too long ago, albeit only briefly. However, Christophe Galtier's men now sit in fourth, outside the UEFA Europa League slot even. Next up for them is a clash with the team that leapfrogged them into third: Rennes. Both sides aim to catch up with, and eventually overtake, Marseille. This game will be crucial in that race. The visitors have been in sizzling form, having won all of their last five outings, and will thus be a huge worry for the hosts. Can Nice bounce back from their defeat to Marseille and beat the league's third-placed team? Tune in to find out.

St-Etienne vs Marseille: Speaking of Marseille, Sampaoli's men will be in for an interesting tie of their own. Les Phocéens are second in the league but only courtesy of a single point. However, with their two closest rivals locking horns, this will be a perfect opportunity for Guendouzi and Co. to put some distance between themselves and one – possibly even both – of their rivals. However, their opposition should not be taken lightly. Yes, the hosts are in the midst of a relegation battle.  However, as mentioned earlier in this round-up, St-Etienne have a habit of fighting back to pick up points this year. Marseille must not become the next victim of this trend.

PSG vs Lorient: Several of PSG's players are off on a much-needed international break, with their star-studded squad joining up with their national teams and getting their mind off the ongoing Parc des Princes mess. While Pochettino's men are top of the league, their recent 3-0 defeat away to Monaco did little to appease their disgruntled fans. After the break, Les Parisiens will take on a Lorient side hovering dangerously close to the danger zone. Anything but a convincing win would be unacceptable. Only time will tell if the Ligue 1 leaders will bounce back or continue their slump.
