Fans on social media have hit out at the match referee and the Video Assistant Referee for the respective roles they played in Newcastle United's Premier League defeat to Chelsea. The Blues rode their luck on Sunday afternoon to secure a vital win after a couple of controversial calls went in their favor before Kai Havertz hit the game's late winner.
Amid the turbulence surrounding the club as a result of the sanctions leveled against club owner Roman Abramovich, Chelsea finally had 'Lady Luck' smiling in their direction when they hosted the Magpies at home on Sunday after. Very early into the proceeding, things could have gone south for the Stamford Bridge outfit when Kai Havertz elbowed Dan Burn in the face. However, the German attacker evaded a sending off by receiving the game's booking despite the incident being reviewed by VAR.
Later on, Newcastle felt hard done by match referee David Coote and VAR after being denied what seemed like a genuine penalty claim. Trevoh Chalobah had pulled Jacob Murphy back by grabbing his shirt and missed out on making contact with the ball on two separate occasions, resultantly bringing the Newcastle winger down inside his side's penalty area. However, the incident was waved off to the anger of the visitors, denying them the chance to potentially break the deadlock from the spot.
No clear and obvious error!

Newcastle are livid that they haven't got a pen for this challenge from Chalobah!

Having held their nerve to keep the score level, Eddie Howe's men were denied a deserving point at Stamford Bridge when Kai Havertz deftly controlled Jorginho's pinpoint overhead pass and poked it home in the 89th minute. The 22-year-old German international came close to increasing the deficit to two but, instead, drew a point-blank save from Martin Dubravka before seeing his attempt bounce off the bar.
Heartbreak for Newcastle!

It's been all about Kai Havertz today and it's he who scores in the final moments to win it, SCENES!

Chelsea's win ended Newcastle's nine-match unbeaten run but fans who monitored the proceeding have lashed out at the match officials for the costly errors made. Here are some of the best reactions on Twitter:
NUFC more than holding their own here. Ref and VAR decisions absolutely mystifying - how have #nufc not had a penalty?!

Chalobah has been very suspect defensively of late compared to the start of the season, he's become more rash and less reliable, that was a penalty.

Ah, Chalobah is very lucky. Two games in a row, he could have given away a silly penalty.

Absolute stonewall penalty. VAR is a joke at times

No red card. No penalty. #NUFC pic.twitter.com/zUqnl3MyVi

Havertz should have been sent off in the first half. Newcastle should have had a clear penalty which was turned down. Havertz scores a last minute winner. What a robbery.

That penalty for Newcastle seemed easy to give.

I have Xhaka things vs City going through my mind.
Speechless.
