Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo cannot stop scoring in 2013 and this is exactly what Portugal need ahead of two huge World Cup qualifiers away to Israel and Azerbaijan.
Last Saturday, Cristiano Ronaldo scored a brilliant header in a league match to equalize for Real Madrid after visitors Mallorca had gone 2-1 up. This was his 350th strike in 611 appearances for club and country. The number 7 icon is only 11 goals from hitting the 200-goal tally for Los Blancos.

It all looks good for the record breaker who has 43 goals in 43 matches this season. In the year 2013 only, CR7 counts 21 goals - 20 for Real Madrid and one for Portugal in the 3-2 defeat to Ecuador back in February.

As club football pauses for international fixtures, fans of the Portuguese national team are hoping that their skipper keeps his decisive form in front of goal. Things are not going well for the Seleccão in the World Cup qualifiers. They seat in third position – five points behind Group F leaders Russia and level on points with second-placed Israel.

Friday’s home match against the latter is a must-win encounter for Cristiano Ronaldo and his team mates. In the absence of Nani who is reportedly injured, the 28-year-old will be under pressure to rectify Portugal’s wastefulness in attack.

In the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Cristiano Ronaldo has scored only one goal. It was in September 2012 away to Luxembourg. Portugal’s top scorer in the campaign is Helder Postiga with a pair of goals. Both came in front of home fans – against Azerbaijan in a 3-0 victory and against Northern Ireland in a hard-fought 1-1 draw.

The matches against Israel and Azerbaijan are tricky ones but captain Cristiano Ronaldo will want to help Portugal grab maximum points as the prospect of reaching the World Cup finals in Brazil is far from being guaranteed.
