The league leaders came back from a goal down to secure an emphatic win over their Basque opponents.

Real Madrid staged one of their most complete performances of the season in Saturday's La Liga clash with Real Sociedad. Los Blancos fought back from a goal behind to secure a comprehensive 4-1 win over Los Txuri-Urdin, extending their lead atop La Liga to eight points in the process.

Sevilla's stalemates with Alaves on Friday gave Madrid the chance to take another step towards the Spanish title, and they seized the opportunity to a fault. Although the final scoreline might suggest otherwise, the win did not come easily for Carlo Ancelotti's side who conceded the game's opener inside the first 10 minutes. Mikel Oyarzabal put the visitors in front at the Bernabeu from the penalty spot after Dani Carvajal fouled David Silva inside the area.

Five minutes before the break Eduardo Camavinga scored with a stinging left-footed effort to tie the game at one all before Luka Modric put the host ahead with a replica of the French starlet's attempt in the 43rd minute. Karim Benzema and Marco Asensio subsequently added their names to the scoresheet in the second half as Los Blancos completed the demolishing exercise ahead of their Champions League clash with Paris Saint-Germain in mid-week.

Having extended their lead, Ancelotti's side also had a number of statistics and milestones revised. Below are a few notable ones:

  • Real Madrid faced just one shot against Real Sociedad (Mikel Oyarzabal's penalty goal), equalling their fewest in a league match since at least 2003/04 (one shot also against Getafe in February 2021).

  • Karim Benzema has so far scored 20 goals in the 21/22 La Liga season, becoming the seventh player to score 20+ goals in four successive campaigns, behind Mundo, Alfredo Di Stéfano, Hugo Sánchez, Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Luis Suárez.

  • At 36 years and 177 days, Luka Modrić has become the oldest Real Madrid player to score from outside the box in the league since at least the 2003/04 season, surpassing Sergio Ramos (34y and 86d vs Mallorca in June 2020).

  •  Real Madrid's Karim Benzema has become the third player to reach 100 assists in La Liga in the 21st century, after Lionel Messi (192) and Daniel Alves (103).

  • Eduardo Camavinga (19 years and 115 days) is the second youngest Real Madrid player to score from outside the box in La Liga since at least 2003/04, after Vinícius Júnior against Osasuna in September 2019 (19 and 75).
