WATCH: Juventus gain edge in Coppa Italia semis as Fiorentina concede late own-goal

March 2, 2022 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The Bianconeri are on the cusp of another cup final following their first leg win in Wednesday's Coppa Italia semi-final encounter.

Juventus seized control in the quest for a place in the final of this season's Coppa Italia by securing a massive win in Florence on Wednesday night. Bianconeri assumed pole position by benefiting from a late own-goal in the first leg of their semi-final clash with La Viola.

While the game's outcome was what eventually mattered, all eyes were on Dusan Vlahovic who returned to his former club for the first time following his move to Turin in the winter transfer window. The 22-year-old Serb has already shown his remarkable goalscoring form for the visitors, but was kept at bay against his former teammates in the hostile atmosphere before fortune favored his current side.

Juventus had nine regular players absent for the encounter, with the likes of Denis Zakaria, Dybala, Federico Chiesa, Giorgio Chiellini and Weston McKennie all sidelined through injury. Statistically, Fiorentina had the better chances to take the lead, with Jonathan Ikone coming close to opening the scoring on two separate occasions in both halves. However, the defining moment came right on the stroke of full-time when it appeared as if the game was headed for stalemates.

The hosts' Lorenzo Venuti Venuti found himself giving Juve the edge after deflecting Juan Cuadrado's cross into his own net in the 91st minute. The player subsequently left the pitch in tears, handing his side a tough test to overcome in the second leg at Allianz Stadium slated for next month.

The winner of the tie is expected to take on either AC Milan or Inter Milan. The pair drew 0-0 when they met on Tuesday night at San Siro and have all to play for in the second leg at the same venue.
