The Reds thought they had snatched the decisive goal but had their goal turned down following a review.

Joel Matip almost emerged as the unlikely hero for Liverpool in Sunday's Carabao Cup final but saw his side's joy shortlived after his goal against Chelsea was disallowed. The center-back thought he had given the Reds the edge with his header from a set-piece but the strike was canceled out after the Video Assistant Referee spotted an infringement in the build-up.

Chances were aplenty in the league cup final and it was Chelsea who were particularly left to rue missed opportunities in both halves. With Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane missing glorious chances to put Liverpool ahead, Mason Mount also replicated the same feat on the opposite end, missing two open goal opportunities to give Chelsea the upper hand.

Liverpool then thought they had snatched it after Joel Matip nodded in what seemed like the first legitimate goal of the season. The ex-Cameroon international popped up at the far post to put the ball in the back of the net after Sadio Mane had kept Alexander-Trent Arnold's set-piece. After a brief celebratory moment, the goal was canceled with the review by VAR suggesting that Virgil van Dijk interfered with play.
