It will be very interesting to see if this story does gain traction over the next few months.

At the end of last year, Romelu Lukaku sat down with Italian media to give an interview discussing his time at Inter and his thoughts on the events that led to his return to Stamford Bridge in a mega-deal.

The interview did not go down well with many fans, with both Nerazzurri supporters and Blues followers slamming the Belgian ace, especially considering that Chelsea had spent a whopping $134 million (£97.5 million) to bring him back to London, ten years after he left in 2011.

Lukaku's manager, Thomas Tuchel, certainly wasn't amused, especially as the interview aired shortly before Chelsea were to face Liverpool in a crunch clash.

During his chat with Sky Italia, Lukaku not only described Chelsea as his "fourth choice" club, but also revealed that he had advised former teammate Lautaro Martinez, with whom he enjoyed a fruitful partnership during his time at Inter, to snub any potential inquiries from the Chelsea camp.

And despite apologizing to the Nerazzurri supporters, many were still not willing to forgive and forget, with some more outspoken ones putting up banners to express how they felt about the Belgian striker.

Lukaku ultimately issued an apology for his comments, but it doesn't seem like this saga has really been put to bed. For starters, Tuchel has lately been playing Kai Havertz as a false number nine and thus leaving Lukaku on the bench. This was on full display recently as Chelsea took on Lille at Stamford Bridge, and Havertz has clearly been relishing in his new role as the German international opened the scoring as the Blues ultimately went on to win the game 2-0.

Well, now Italian reports, namely La Gazzetta dello Sport, have claimed that Lukaku is "so keen" on coming back to Inter that he'll even be willing to take a pay cut.

That's despite the Nerazzurri not really having made any noises about a potential return, but the same report also claims that Lukaku has been aggressively networking with some of Inter's directors about making this a reality.

With plenty of time to go between now and the summer transfer market, it will be interesting to see how this story develops over the next few months.
