UEFA Champions League: How to watch Villarreal vs Juventus live on Feb 22

February 21, 2022 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
Juventus travel to Villarreal in search of a favorable result to fuel their Champions League aspirations this season.

Villarreal will begin their Champions knockout campaign on Tuesday night when they welcome Juventus to the Estadio de la Ceramica. The Yellow Submarines have held their own in the domestic league as well as Europe's elite competition and will be poised to make a difference despite the magnitude of challenge they face. Considering the level of opponents they faced before securing their place in the knockout round, it is only fair to think that they could give the Bianconeri a run for their money in this Round of 16 first-leg tie.

Unai Emery's men did enough to sail through Group F which featured Manchester United, Atalanta and Young Boys. The La Liga outfit gathered 10 points from a potential 18 to finish as runners-up behind the Red Devils and relegate their Italian opponents to the Europa League. On the domestic front, the battle has almost been the same, with the club actively in the mix for land a Champions League qualification place ahead of next season.

They will approach Tuesday's clash with Juventus on the back of a our-game unbeaten run in La Liga, where they have successfully taken 10 points from a possible 12. During the period, they have conceded just a goal, although they have come up against Real Madrid and Real Betis. Having only reached the Champions League knockout stage for the third time-ever, one would expect the luck of the Spanish club to shine bright while using their current form as the needed inspiration.

Needless to say, Juventus will be well aware of Villarreal's six-game unbeaten run on home soil and will look to ruin the streak in-favor of their own cause. The Bianconeri have enjoyed contrasting fortunes on the domestic front and in the league, with their record in the latter looking glossy ahead of their first outing in the knockout stage. In spite of their domestic struggles, Max Allegri's men topped Group H, finishing above defending Chelsea with five wins from six games.

On Tuesday, Juve will make their eighth successive appearance in the knockout rounds, but will look to break the curse of the Round 16 stage that has dented their aspirations in the last two seasons. The weekend's 1-1 draw with Torino in Derby della Mole was definitely not the result needed to prepare for the upcoming test but the Old Lady should be fancied to get a good result at the Ceramica, even with a number of key players expected to miss out.

Team news

Villarreal will go into the encounter without the talismanic Gerard Moreno as he recuperates from an injury. Francis Coquelin and Ruben Pena are also unavailable for selection as they continue to nurse respective injuries while the involvement of both Giovani Lo Celso and Etienne Capoue remain doubtful. However, skipper of the side Raul Albiol is in contention for a starting place after serving a ban. Arnaut Danjuma, who scored his first hat-trick for the club in the weekend's big win over Granada, is expected to lead the attacking line.

For Juventus, Federico Bernardeschi, Federico Chiesa and Giorgio Chiellini are out of contention due to injuries. Over the weekend, their woes were compounded after Daniele Rugani and Paulo Dybala suffered respective injuries in the draw with Torino. Meanwhile, Adrien Rabiot remains a doubt following a training ground injury.

Predicted starting XI

  • Villarreal: Asenjo; Foyth, Albiol, Torres, Pedraza; Trigueros, Capoue, Parejo; Chukwueze, Dia, Danjuma

  • Juventus: Szczesny; Cuadrado, Danilo, De Ligt, Sandro; Locatelli, Zakaria, Rabiot; Arthur; Morata, Vlahovic.
