FA Women’s Super League-leaders Arsenal will travel across London on Friday to face rival Chelsea, who can climb to the top of the league table with a win. The most anticipated FA WSL matchday has dawned upon women’s football fans. Headlining Matchday 15 is first-place Arsenal going toe-to-toe with second-place Chelsea. Also, the Manchester Derby will go down at Academy Stadium on Sunday morning.

Chelsea vs. Arsenal: Form going into the match

Reigning WSL champions Chelsea has responded well to a rocky end to 2021, going undefeated in all competitions in 2022. The blues started the year with a goalless league draw against Brighton & Hove Albion, a 2-0 win against London foes West Ham United and a 1-0 victory over Manchester City. Additionally, wins over Aston Villa and Manchester United in the FA Women’s Cup Fourth Round and FA WSL Cup Semifinals, respectively, have helped Emma Hayes’ Blues get back on track to challenge for the league title.

Arsenal, on the other hand, started the year with a disappointing 2-0 away loss at Birmingham City but endured the most difficult part of their schedule since then. The Gunners drew against Manchester City and Manchester United and defeated Brighton in league play. However, a 1-0 loss to Manchester United in the FA WSL Cup Quarterfinals saw them exit early. Jonas Eidevall’s side managed a 1-0 win against London City to remain alive in the FA Women’s Cup.

Chelsea vs. Arsenal: What is at stake?

To put it in simple terms, the league title. The winner of this game is most likely to go on and win the 2021/22 FA WSL trophy.

A Chelsea win would see them overtake Arsenal by one point and a game in hand. The game in hand means that four points could separate the two frontrunners if the Blues defeat Everton in their makeup game. Unlike Arsenal, the Blues still must play one of the top four sides – Manchester United.

As for the Gunners, they will not play a top-four side after Friday’s game against Chelsea. A win would see Arsenal go five points ahead of the Blues, and two points ahead of them even if they win their makeup game. Unlike Chelsea, however, Arsenal is still competing in the UEFA Women’s Champions League. Eidevall needs to make sure he keeps track of all his tabs if he wants his team to secure a major trophy this year.
