Liverpool's Egyptian star did not take a spot kick in the Pharaohs' defeat on Sunday, which sparked anger from Carragher.

Yesterday's Africa Cup of Nations final ended in heartbreak for Mohamed Salah and the Egyptian national team as the Pharaohs were up on the receiving end of a penalty shootout defeat.

Despite overcoming Ivory Coast and Cameroon in the round of 16 and semifinals courtesy of spot kicks, third time was not the charm for the North African giants as they missed out on a record-extending eighth title.

Salah and Co. failed to convert two penalties during the shootout, with Mohanad Lasheen's miss in his country's fourth attempt proving to be costly. Given that Senegal had gone first, Sadio Mane took his nation's fifth attempt and converted it, thus denying Egypt their fifth penalty and, ultimately, the title.

After the match ended and the dust somewhat settled, Salah was on the receiving end of criticism from one of his biggest fans: former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher. The Sky Sports pundit took to Twitter to vent his frustration with the Anfield superstar for his role in the shootout.

The former Roma ace did not miss from the spot, but he also did not take a penalty as he was penciled down for Egypt's fifth—or possibly sixth—kick. However, as mentioned above, Carlos Queiroz's side did not reach that far as they had only taken four attempts. This did not go down well with Carragher who argued that the best player in the team should not wait for the match-winning penalty as that moment may never come, pointing to a similar incident involving Cristiano Ronaldo as an example.

"That is why your best penalty taker should never go fifth," the Englishman wrote on Twitter straight after the final whistle. "Mo Salah not taking a penalty for Egypt in a shootout in a final is madness. Also happened to Ronaldo years ago for Portugal v Spain."

Jamie was pressed on this issue as one follower asked why Steven Gerrard was penciled in as Liverpool's fifth penalty taker in their iconic shootout victory over AC Milan in the 2005 UEFA Champions League final in Istanbul. However, the former fullback pointed out that Gerrard was not their official penalty taker. Salah, on the other hand, is the Reds' first-choice penalty taker in one of the toughest leagues in the world.

The Egyptian ace was left in tears after the defeats, with club teammate Sadio Mane eventually rushing over to console him. Check out their lovely moment together in the clip below.
