Los Blancos clinched their 12th title by beating their La Liga rivals in Saudi Arabia.

Real Madrid skipper Marcelo has entered the history books after leading his side to their 12th Spanish Super Cup win. The 33-year-old leftback who featured as a substitute has equalled Los Blancos legend Gento as the player with the most trophies (23) in the history of the club following Sunday's win over Athletic Club.

Real Madrid were put in cruise control after Luka Modric found the back of the net with a beautiful strike in the first half before the interval. Although Athletic were more robust defensively, they barely threatened Carlo Ancelotti's men in the attacking department.

In the 52nd minute, Karim Benzema continued his fine goalscoring form by coverting a controversial penalty. It took the intervention of VAR to confirm the legitimacy of the referee's decision as the Frenchman's shot had bounced off of his standing foot before striking Yeray Alvarez's arm.

The Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois subseqently turned up big for Real Madrid, saving penalty later on in the proceeding. Eder Militao conceded the spot-kick and was immediately sent off after his arm turned away Raul Garcia's goal-bound header. However, any dream of a comeback was squashed after the Spaniard failed to beat the Merengues' shot-stopper.

Prior to that, Marcelo was introduced into the fray, replacing Vinicius Junior to see out of the last four minutes of the encounter. The Brazilian has now won four UEFA Champions League trophies, five La Liga titles, two Copa del Reys, five Spanish Super Cups, four Club World Cups and three UEFA Super Cups.
