Chelsea eyeing highly-rated Ligue 1 and EPL stars

Chelsea keen on strengthening midfield, eyeing highly-rated Ligue 1 and Premier League stars

January 5, 2022 By Ali M.
However, that's not all as the Blues look to address the wingback and center-back roles.

With Chelsea's Premier League title aspirations being all but over this season, reports of potential signings at Stamford Bridge have recently come spiraling in.

One area of concern for the club is midfield, with the Blues set to address this position over two transfer windows – the ongoing January window and the upcoming summer. And according to Goal, the London giants have their eyes on two highly-rated midfielders.

The first name on their list is Aurelien Tchouameni, one of the most promising young French players. In fact, the 21-year-old, who currently plies his trade at Monaco, made his international debut not too long ago, deputizing for N'Golo Kante during the UEFA Nations League finals and performing exceptionally well.

An "in-depth analysis" of the Frenchman is currently underway, with Tuchel's side keeping an eye out for his "attitude and personal life" in preparation for a summer bid as any move for the young midfielder will be costly.

The other man on their list needs no introduction as it is Declan Rice, the stellar England international who is at the heart of West Ham's amazing run both domestically and in Europe. The Three Lions superstar is said to be valued at £100M, which translates into roughly $135M, making him more than double the price of Tchouameni.

Chelsea are only likely to sign one of the two aforementioned midfielders as Tuchel is reportedly keen on welcoming back Connor Gallagher to Chelsea, with the Englishman, who is currently on loan at Crystal Palace, excelling at Selhurst Park under Patrick Vieira's 4-3-3 system.

The midfield isn't the only position the Blues are keen on addressing as the recent injuries to Reece James and Ben Chilwell – the latter is out for the rest of the season – could force Chelsea's hands. Hudson-Odoi and Pulisic have deputized but neither have succeeded. As a result, Everton's Lucas Digne is being explored as an emergency solution but the priority right now is to recall Emerson Palmieri back from his loan spell at Lyon to fill in for Chilwell. Unfortunately, the Italian's contractual situation makes it difficult for his loan spell to be cancelled prematurely.

Another area of worry is the center-back position, with Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen and Cesar Azpilicueta all entering the final six months of their contracts and thus being free to negotiate with other clubs this month. Uncertainty reigns in this department as Chelsea remain positive in this situation despite all the other continental powerhouses being linked – Real Madrid, PSG, and Bayern in Rudiger's case; Barcelona and Atletico in Azpilicueta's.

Regardless, potential targets have been drawn up, with Sevilla's Jules Kounde and Leicester's Wesley Fofana being shortlisted. However, all these positions will not be addressed during January, meaning Tuchel will have to make do with what's at his disposal in this crucial month of fixtures, starting with Wednesday's first leg Carabao Cup semifinal showdown versus Tottenham.
