Premier League: All the records broken as Man City hit Leeds for seven

December 14, 2021 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The Citizens staged a complete massacre in Tuesday night's Premier League clash inside Etihad.

Several Premier League records have been revised after Manchester City ripped Leeds United apart with a strong attacking display to extend their Premier League lead. The Citizens put seven unanswered goals past Marcelo Bielsa's men to establish a four point lead atop the table ahead of a busy schedule in the upcoming festivities.

Moments after Bernado Silva had missed an open-goal chance, Phil Foden broke the deadlock in the eighth minute by following up after Rodri's effort was saved by Illan Meslier. Five minutes later, Jack Grealish nodded home a cross from Riyad Mahrez to double Man City's advantage before Kevin de Bruyne etched his name on the scoreboard just after the half-hour mark with an assist from Rodri.

Four minutes after play had resumed for the second half, Mahrez scored City's fourth goal of the ninth before De Bruyne followed up with a fifth with a thunderous strike. Defensive pair John Stones and Nathan Ake subsequently climaxed the night's big win by scoring the sixth and seventh goals respectively. while Manchester City ascended cloud nine with the turn of events, Leeds hit a new low - dropping to 15th position and on the cusp of a relegation battle.

Here are all the milestones attained by Pep Guardiola's men in the night's big win over Leeds:

  • Phil Foden scored Man City's 500th @premierleague goal under Pep Guardiola, in just his 207th game in charge, the fastest any manager has seen their sides reach 500 goals in the competition (previously Jürgen Klopp, 234).

  • In the 568th game of his club managerial career, Marcelo Bielsa has seen his side concede seven goals for the very first time.

  • Following his appearance in the win over Leeds, Riyad Mahrez is only the third African player to make 100+ appearances for two different sides in the competition, after Kanu and Cheikhou Kouyaté.

  • Riyad Mahrez is the first player in Premier League history to score on his 100th appearance for two different sides in the competition (Man City & Leicester).

  • Since his debut for Man City in September 2015, Kevin De Bruyne has now scored more Premier League goals from outside the penalty area than any other player (20).
