Midweek match-days are rare in the Bundesliga. This is a week in which the destination of the title could be decided. Furthermore this is also a week in which the title-race could be blown wide open.
On Tuesday, defending champions Borussia Dortmund plays Fortuna Düsseldorf in what is likely to be an extremely one-sided clash. Düsseldorf did beat HSV on Friday. However, they rode their luck in that match. HSV is also in action against Schalke. For Hamburg, the big question is: who will replace Rafael Van der Vaart? The Dutchman picked up an injury which is likely to keep him out of the remainder of the year.

HSV’s opponent’s Schalke, played Frankfurt on Saturday and earned a 1-1 draw. In retrospect, especially looking at their second half performance, Schalke should have walked away with all three points. However, Frankfurt was denied what was a legitimate penalty. In the end, Armin Veh seemed delighted with the point.

Frankfurt’s opponent this week is Mainz. Mainz was perhaps a bit unlucky to come away with nothing in their encounter against Dortmund. They took the lead and had chances to equalize once Dortmund struck twice. Dortmund’s main title rival, Bayern, takes on SC Freiburg in the Black Forest.

Christian Streich’s side will look to trouble Bayern once again. Bayern rarely wins easily against SCF. The previous meeting finished in a drab 0-0 draw. Freiburg will want to back up their impressive win over Bruno Labbadia’s Stuttgart with yet another impressive result this week.

Stuttgart plays FC Augsburg. Augsburg can be considered unlucky to have come away with a single point against Gladbach. A defensive howler allowed Gladbach to equalize. Augsburg will look to take down struggling Stuttgart. Gladbach plays Wolfsburg this week. Wolfsburg put in a very good performance against Bremen and can be considered unlucky to have come away with a solitary point.

Bremen takes on Bayer Leverkusen in one of the biggest matches of the week. Leverkusen took a 0-2 lead over Hoffenheim but allowed the village club to come back at them. The final moments were rather nervy for them. They saw that through and closed the gap to second place to a mere single point. Bremen will be a tough test. Fatigue could be a factor as Bremen had to withstand constant pressure with ten men against a good Wolfsburg side.

Meanwhile, Hannover will look to recover from the embarrassing result against Bayern with a win over struggling Greuther Fürth. Finally, FC Nürnberg after yet another derby draw takes on Hoffenheim. Nürnberg needs to win this. However, Hoffenheim has shown some improvement despite results not going their way recently.

Ahead of the next match-day’s big clash between the current top two, will there be any changes at the top of the table? Let me hear your thoughts.
