EPL Round-up after November 28 games

Premier League Round-up: Race for top spot tightens after Chelsea's draw

November 29, 2021 By Oscar Rojas
The Blues were unable to beat Manchester United's ultra-defensive approach, which caused their lead at the top to be narrowed.

The past weekend in the top football category in England gave fans quite a few thrills, especially with those teams leading the pack making things a bit closer between them. Michael Carrick's caretaker job came to an end with a draw against Chelsea, and teams such as Wolves and Tottenham have narrowed the gap between them and those teams in the top five, which makes us look forward to an interesting end of the year in the English top-flight.

All teams in the English top-flight will have to get ready to play two games this week, as there will be some midweek matches scheduled from Tuesday to Thursday. Among those, the Merseyside Derby and Manchester United against Arsenal will attract most headlines.

Without further ado, here are the main talking points after Matchday 13 in the Premier League.

Who are the top five Premier League teams after Matchday 13?

The three top spots in the league remained the same, but Chelsea's lead was shrunk to one point after their draw against Manchester United, leaving Manchester City and Liverpool one win away from toppling the Blues off the top spot. West Ham lost against the Citizens and are now level with Arsenal on 23 points, although their positive goal difference gives them an edge over the Gunners before this midweek's games.

Premier League top 3 scorers

Mo Salah's stellar performance all season long saw him stay at the top of the league's scoring charts despite not being able to find the back of the net this weekend. On the contrary, Jamie Vardy and Diogo Jota narrowed the Egyptian's lead at the top with their braces against Watford and Southampton last weekend.

Premier League – Top headlines

  • Sancho joins elite list of scorers in Chelsea draw - The English ace has been a huge disappointment at Old Trafford, but he managed to get a bit of credit with his performance against the current European champions. Sancho's goal earned the team one point last Sunday, and if that was not enough reason to be happy, he will also be able to celebrate his status as the third youngest player ever to score a goal for the Red Devils while playing away from home against Chelsea.

  • Liverpool reach goalscoring milestone after Southampton win - The Reds are still third in the tournament, but their offensive display has to be ranked as top-notch. Right now, Liverpool lead the league with 39 goals, their highest tally in Premier League history after 13 games ever.

  • Steven Gerrard hits the ground running at Aston Villa - The former Liverpool midfielder is quickly making a name for himself in the Premier League as a coach, as he has led the Villains to a couple of wins in his first two games at the helm. With these numbers, Gerrard has become the second coach in Aston Villa's history to win back-to-back games in his first two appearances as a coach since John Gregory did so in the 1997-98 campaign.

Top matches to watch in the Premier League on November 30-Dec.6, 2021

Manchester United vs Arsenal: The midweek game between the Red Devils and the Gunners will certainly gather the most attention from fans and experts. The Gunners will get to this match in a better position than Manchester United, who could very well have new boss Ralf Rangnick making his debut as their new coach.

West Ham vs Chelsea: The Blues will continue their season with an interesting clash against the surprising Hammers, who are still among the top five teams in the tournament. Thomas Tuchel's team thrived in their last away game, and they might benefit from their visit to West Ham to keep their spot as league leaders.

Wolves vs Liverpool: The Reds will travel to the Molineux with everything to play for against one of the rising teams in the league, who are only three points away from reaching the top five. This game will have some interesting facts to keep an eye on, including how Wolves' defense manages to keep Liverpool's impressive attack at bay. Will the team coached by Bruno Lage be able to contain Mo Salah and former Wolf Diogo Jota?

Watford vs Manchester City: The team coached by Pep Guardiola will make a trip to face none other than Claudio Ranieri and his new version of Watford, a team that is still struggling to find consistency but that has also beaten a major contender such as Manchester United. Guardiola's men could climb to the top of the table with a win here, but the man in the dugout for the Hornets may still have some tricks up his sleeve to surprise Pep and Co.
