Kante and Chilwell injured during Juve clash

Chelsea 4-0 Juventus: Blues' massive win comes at big cost

November 24, 2021 By Michelle Bonsu
The London giants banished their frustrating Italian hoodoo in resounding fashion as they routed Juve 4-0 to secure a round of 16 spot - but it comes at a huge cost.

On Tuesday evening, Chelsea took on Juventus, with revenge firmly on the Blues' minds after losing 1-0 to the same side on matchday two.

In addition, Chelsea supporters were hoping to see their team finally overcome their frustrating Italian hoodoo, which had seen them win just one of their last ten meetings with Serie A sides prior to Tuesday's game.

Well, the reigning Champions League holders more than banished that hoodoo - they obliterated it. By the time the final whistle blew, Chelsea not only had booked their spot in the round of 16, but had beaten Juventus 4-0. That's the worst defeat the Turin side have suffered in their Champions League history, and the first time they've lost by four or more goals since being beaten by Roma in a Serie A match by the same score-line back in February 2004.

It's also the third time that an English side has had three (or more) different scorers on the score-sheet during a Champions League match, as Trevoh Chalobah, Reece James, Callum Hudson-Odoi, and Timo Werner all grabbed a goal each.

However, the crucial win has unfortunately come at a huge cost. Key players N'Golo Kante and Ben Chilwell both suffered knee and ankle injuries respectively during the match, and could likely miss out on Chelsea's crunch clash with Manchester United this weekend.

As of now, Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel isn't "totally sure" if the duo will recover in time for the highly-anticipated encounter, which kicks off on Sunday at 14:00 GMT (09:00 EST). Obviously, Blues fans will hope to have both players back as the league leaders look to try to extend their three point lead at the top of the table.
