The Russian outfit which came to fame only recently takes on Liverpool this week.
Liverpool and Anzhi battled at Anfield on Match-day Three. Liverpool recovered from a loss against Udinese on Match-day Two to beat the Russians 1-0. A Stewart Downing goal settled the contest. Downing has been criticized for his lack of goals since his move to Anfield. The goal he scored against Anzhi however was without doubt a stunning one.

Liverpool might be top of their group in the Europa League; however, they are nowhere near the top of their domestic league. They drew with Newcastle 1-1 last weekend. Johan Cabaye’s goal gave Newcastle the lead. Luiz Suarez, the talisman and so often the saviour of his club, scored in the 67th minute to help his club to a draw.

Anzhi has been performing brilliantly in the Russian Premier League. They sit second, a point behind leaders CSKA Moscow. They have 32 points to their name. 32 points are a decent return at-least from 14 matches. Last weekend, they beat Terek 3-1. Mbark Boussafa, Lacina Traore and Christopher Samba scored. A goal from Terek captain Blagoy Georgiev proved to be nothing more than a consolation.

Samba might not score against Liverpool. However, he will not let the attackers of the team from Merseyside have a good time. Samba’s exploits in the Premier League are well known. He used his physicality well in England. He played against Liverpool many times. He will not be daunted by their visit at all.

At the other end of the field will be Samuel Eto’o, winner of two Champions Leagues. Eto’o is always a dangerous player. He is the captain of Anzhi. He hurt many sides with his brilliance and he will be looking to grab a few goals in this encounter in the harsh winters in Russia.

Anzhi is undefeated in their past four European home games. They haven’t conceded at home yet. Liverpool has played Russian opponents three times in Russia in European competition. They won twice and lost once. Russia is a difficult place to earn points from. Brendan Rodgers will have to choose the right players to take on wily Guus Hiddink’s side.

Will Liverpool be able to win this match? We will find out on Thursday.

Prediction: Anzhi 2-1 Liverpool
