Portugal will look to book a place at Qatar 2022 by avoiding defeat when they welcome Serbia to Lisbon on Sunday night.

The story so far

Portugal will host Serbia in Lisbon on Sunday night needing to avoid defeat in order to finish first in Group A and qualify for the 2022 World Cup. Both nations have accumulated 17 points apiece although it is the former who lead the pack with a superior goal difference. A disappointing 0-0 draw with Ireland on Thursday left a bitter taste in the mouths of Fernando Santos and his men as it prevented them from gaining a significant advantage over their rivals in the race for top spot. With a record of five wins and two draws in the bag, they should be well motivated to get the desired result to secure their fate.

For Serbia, Sunday's encounter will be their biggest game yet in recent memory due to obvious reasons. The Eagles are eager to build on their last appearance at the 2018 World Cup in Russia but will have to put in more work than usual to secure an automatic qualification to Qatar. They approach the encounter with Portugal off the back of a a 4-0 victory over Qatar in a friendly encounter. The last competitive fixture they were involved in happened in October against Azerbajian and it was through that 3-1 home win that was able to lift them to the top of Group A momentarily.

Team news

Bernardo Silva sat out Portugal's match against the Republic of Ireland after picking up a muscle injury, but the Manchester City attacker is now available to feature in the starting lineup for this match. Nuno Mendes, who was suspended last time out, might possibly return to the starting lineup at left-back. On the contrary, Pepe will be absent for Portugal after picking up a red card in their previous outing.

Serbia will go into the game without Matija Nastastic, Marko Petkovic, Filip Djuricic, and Darko Lazovic. The quartet were all forced to withdraw due to injury. Ahead of Sunday's meeting, the visitors do not have any new injury concerns heading into the game.
