Brazil will aim to extend their unbeaten run in the qualifiers when they host Colombia in Sao Paulo on Thursday night.

The story so far

On Thursday evening, two South American football heavyweights will go head to head at the Neo Quimica Arena in Sao Paulo in the latest round of World Cup 2022 qualifiers. Hosts Brazil are unbeaten and at the top of the chart, while their opponents are fighting for the final automatic qualification berth in fourth place.

Brazil will approach the upcoming encounter on the back of a 4-1 win over Uruguay in their 11th game of the campaign. It is interesting to note that the Selecao's 0-0 draw with Colombia during the qualifying round in September stands as the only point in the campaign where Tite's men failed to pick up a win. They have accumulated 31 points in the process, scoring 24 goals and conceding just four within the period.

That withstanding, their record withe Colombia should provide enough inspiration for them to extend their remarkable run with a spot at the mundial in Qatar practically sealed. Since 2003, the pair have met 13 times and it was on only one occassion that Brazil have been defeated by Los Cafeteros. Seven of the meetings have ended in draws, with the remaining five games being wins for the Selecao.

Needless to say, Colombia are still expected to give their hosts a good run for their money when they clash at Neo Quimica Arena in Sao Paulo. Just like the side they come up against, Reinaldo Rivera's men have been on a seven game unbeaten streak and although there is a glaring contrast between the number of wins managed by both sides during the period. The 2021 Copa America bronze medalists have managed 0-0 draws in their last three games against Uruguay, Brazil and Ecuador. With the 3-1 win over Chile being the only anomaly, they equally registered 1-1 draws in meetings with Paraguay and Bolivia.

They currently seat in an automatic qualificatin spot but their position is well threaten with the likes of Uruguay and Chile breathing down their necks. Should Los Cafetaros fail against Brazil and should any of the aforementioned pair secure a win, they could drop down farther as they lead them with a point and three points respectively.

Team news

The biggest talking point surrounding the Brazil squad was with regards to the omission of Vinicius Jr. The Real Madrid sensation has been in brilliant form this season but was not included in the squad for the upcoming meetings with Colombia and Argentina. Meanwhile, Barcelona outcast Philippe Coutinho earned a spot for the first time in over a year after getting some game time at his club side.

For Colombia, only Radamel Falcao will be unavailable for the clash out through injury with the likes of Luiz Dias, Luis Muriel and Duvan Zapata set to lead on the attacking front.

Predicted starting XI

Brazil: Ederson; Royal, Silva, Marquinhos, Sandro; Fabinho, Fred; Paqueta, Neymar, Raphinha; Jesus.

Colombia possible starting lineup: Ospina; Mojica, Sanchez, Mina, Cuadrado; Uribe, Barrios, Quintero; Diaz, Muriel, Zapata.
