European champions Chelsea come into the seven-team competition as the pre-tournament favourites.
Corinthians, the winners of the Copa Libertadores, and Chelsea, the winners of the UEFA Champions League, will debut in the FIFA Club World Cup at the semi-final stage on December 12 and 13, respectively.

The competition, which will be played between December 6-16, will commence with a playoff between Auckland City, Oceania's representative, and the champions of the Japanese J-League, who have yet to be determined.

The winner of the playoff will progress to the quarter-finals against the African champions, with the winner of that game earning the right to face Brazil's Corinthians.

Monterrey of Mexico will play the Asian champions for a chance to test their might against European champions and pre-tournament favourites Chelsea.

In total the competition will consist of seven clubs, six of them being continental champions, as well as the host nations league winner.

The final will be disputed on December 16 at the 72,000-capacity International Stadium of Yokohama. In last year's final Lionel Messi scored twice to lead Barcelona to a 4-0 romp of Neymar's Santos.

In eight editions of the Club World Cup, the competition has only ever been won by clubs from Europe and South America.
