Giroud scores to fire Milan to top of the table

Milan 1-0 Torino: Giroud's goal helps Rossoneri match impressive record

October 27, 2021 By Michelle Bonsu
The Rossoneri now have temporarily moved on top of the Serie A table after a brilliant start to the 2021/22 season.

Milan's season so far can be best described as a tale of two parts. Back in the Champions League for the first time since the 2013/14 campaign, the Rossoneri have really found things difficult, and for the first time in club history, have lost all three of their opening games.

Yet, although their European dreams appear to be rapidly going up in smoke, Stefano Pioli's men are again going from strength to strength in Serie A. As of now, they are only one of two teams yet to lose so far this season - the other being Napoli - and thanks to Olivier Giroud's goal on Tuesday evening, have now seized top spot in the table.

While this is temporary, as it will depend on how Napoli does in their clash with Bologna on Thursday, it's still a notable feat as Milan have now won nine of their last ten games.

That's matching a very impressive record set from well before any of the players, their coach, and even the vast majority of Milan fans were even born.

Indeed, back during the 1954/55 term, Milan also won nine of their first ten matches (while drawing the other). The coach at that time was Hungarian Béla Guttmann, but despite guiding them to the top of the table, he was surprisingly sacked midway through the season. Nonetheless, the Diavolo went on to win their fifth Scudetto.

Milan fans will certainly be pleased with the team's progress this year, but will nonetheless be wary as last season saw the Rossoneri top the table, only to crash midway following a 3-1 loss to Juventus - their first of the 2020/21 campaign - and end up finishing in a distant second, 12 points behind cross-town rivals Inter.

Next up for Milan will be a big game against Roma, and many eyes will be tuned in to see if Pioli's side can make it ten wins out of their first 11 games.
