The Reds finally got their revenge over Atletico Madrid, beating them 3-2 in Tuesday night's encounter.

The clash between Atletico Madrid and Liverpool on Tuesday night was one for ages with several sub-plots emerging as both clubs battled for supremacy in Group B of the UEFA Champions League. In the end, it was the latter that made away with the three maximum points after finding their feet having been dealt a scare by the host in the early stage of the proceeding.

Jurgen Klopp's men needed just nine minutes to announce their presence inside the Wanda Metropolitano and they had Mohamed Salah to thank for once more as it was his deflected shot that fired them in front. Shortly after, Naby Keita doubled the Anfield outfit's advantage with another fine goal, his first in any competition this season. Nevertheless, little did the visitors know that their two-goal advantage was not going to make it past the first break.

It was Antoine Griezmann who pulled Atletico Madrid back into the clash, grabbing a brace in a space of 14 minutes to ensure that the scores were locked at two-all before the break. However, a rather unfortunate turn of event led to the subsequent dismissal of the former Barcelona superstar, with the player catching Roberto Firmino in the face with the studs of his boots. With Diego Simeone's side handicapped, the Reds pressed ahead to capitalise on the fact that they had a man advantage and were duly rewarded in no time.

Once again, it was Mohamed Salah who emerged as the savior, scoring from the penalty spot to put Liverpool back in the driver's seat. Not long after, Atletico were denied a penalty of their own by VAR after defender Jose Gimenez was supposedly brought down by Liverpool's Diogo Jota during a set-piece.  

In the end, Liverpool successfully made away with all the three points and currently sit atop the table with four points more than their closest rivals Atletico Madrid. Here are a few records and feats managed by the Premier League club after the night's triumph:

  • Salah has become the first man in Liverpool's history to score in nine successive matches in across all competitions.

  • Antoine Griezmann is the first player in UEFA Champions League's history to score twice and be sent off.

  • Liverpool scored and conceded twice in the first half of a UEFA Champions League match for the first time.

  • Liverpool now unbeaten in 21 matches in all competitions (W15 D6), their longest run since May 1989 under Kenny Dalglish (24).
