Portugal will be eager to regain their status as leaders in Group A when they host Luxembourg on Tuesday night.

Preview

Portugal host Luxembourg at Estadio Algarve on Tuesday night for their sixth game in Group A of the European World Cup qualifying campaign. While progression is often a formality for the Selecaao, they have been dealt a little slip-up in the quest for a place at Qatar 2022 and will be fighting to make it business as usual in the upcoming games. The former UEFA Nations League title holders currently sit in second position on the league board, just a point behind Serbia who have secured 14 from a possible 18.

On Tuesday, Fernando Santos' charges will approach the encounter on the back of another win against Qatar in a friendly encounter. Unlike the meeting between the pair in September where the World Cup host managed a consolation goal in the 3-1 defeat despite having had two men sent off, the Seleccao put three unanswered goals past them in last week's meeting. Cristiano Ronaldo, Jose Fonte and Andre Silva were the players to get on the scoresheet, with the former making history as the player with the most goals against different opponents in the history of international football.

In terms of form, Portuga cannot be scrutinized to the extreme as they have only recorded two loses across their last 14 appearances. It is pretty noticeable that they have put together a run of four successive games without defeat. Within the period, the Iberian nation has conceded just two goals in the four matches played. Consdering the fact that they have conceded just one goal in all the meetings within the last decade, Santos' men should be comfortable when their European counterparts come to town.

While qualification remains unlikely for Luxembourg, they will be eager to prove a point and potentially ruin the party when they take on Portugal. So far, they have managed just a single win across their last seven matches, losing six and drawing the remaining one game. Needless to say, they have somewhat impressed by amassing six points from their last five games, averagning more than a goal per game and sitting above Ireland and Azerbaijan on the table.

With the potential to ruin the party for Portugual, Luxembourg will be keen on stopping the machinery of Cristiano Ronaldo who continues to extend his international goalscoring record.
