The World Cup Qualifiers in Europe are entering its later half, and surprisingly enough, we could witness some of the teams earning at least a spot in the playoff round by the time this weekend's games are over.
These batch of games will not have some heavy hitters around, as Italy, Spain, Belgium, and France are involved in the later stages of the UEFA Nations League. All of those teams lead their groups in the UEFA World Cup Qualifiers, but Spain and Italy could be in for a surprise if Sweden and Switzerland earn two wins during the break.
With that in mind, the upcoming weekend could be crucial to determine the fate of some of the most relevant footballers in the world, which will be trying to lead their national teams to safer ground and to a ticket for the World Cup set to take place during the winter of 2022.
Let's have a closer look at the current standings in all groups.
Group A has seen Portugal take the top spot with thirteen points, but that could change this weekend if Serbia can beat Luxembourg this weekend. Spain will also be hoping for Sweden to drop points when they host Kosovo. A win for the Blagult could make the race for the top spot tighter than ever, and with one game in hand, the blue and yellow side may be in the driver's seat for the remainder of the Qualifiers in Group B if things go their way.
Group C is led by Italy, who have a comfortable six-point lead over Switzerland. Nevertheless, the Swiss Army could get closer to the top spot this weekend if they can manage to beat Northern Ireland. A loss or a draw could practically give Italy the ticket to play in the 2022 World Cup. Meanwhile, Group D seems to have been sorted out after just six matchdays for the leaders France, who have a seven-point lead over the second and third-placed teams. The clash between Ukraine and Finland this weekend may leave only one of them in the race for the playoff ticket, and that can only be good news for France, who have played more games than both of those rivals.
Group E could also be decided this weekend with the clash between the Czech Republic and Wales. Both teams are level with seven points, and needless to say, both need three points to keep their options of winning the group alive. A loss here for any of them could be devastating for their hopes of even making the playoffs. Elsewhere, Group F will give us a chance to watch Denmark, the only team in the Qualifiers with a perfect record. The red and white side will be facing Moldova this weekend, and if there is a draw in the clash between Scotland and Israel, the Danish side could be the first to book their tickets to play in the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Group G is one of the closest in these Qualifiers. Right now, the Netherlands and Norway share the top spot with 13 points each, but Turkey is close behind with eleven, and their match against Norway could very well become one of the best this weekend. The same goes for Group H, where Croatia and Russia are fighting toe-to-toe for the top spot with 13 points, and both sides will have to put up their best performances to keep up the good work if they want to get to the final group game with an option to avoid the playoff ties.
Group I featuring England could also give us a clearer picture by the time this weekend's games are over, with England placing their unbeaten run at stake when they make the trip to Andorra. The Three Lions will be keeping an eye on the Hungary vs Albania game, as one of those teams could be out of the race in the event of a loss. Last but not least, Group J could see Germany kicking Romania out of the competition if they are capable of beating them this Saturday. In such case, Armenia would be the only team capable of nabbing the World Cup ticket away from Die Mannschaft if things keep their current course.
There will be eleven games taking place this Friday, with Germany vs Romania and Turkey vs Norway being the main ones to keep an eye on.
