The Netherlands are making drastic changes following their abysmal UEFA Euro 2012 campaign. In the latest move, Louis Van Gaal has been appointed as the Oranje’s new coach.
This news may come as a disappointment to legend Ruud Gullit. Last month, the latter described himself as the man with “the qualities to replace Van Marwijk as national team coach” according to Voetbal International.

The same news source also reported that Johan Cruyff’s number one choice for the Dutch job was Frank Rijkaard.
However, the KNVB had other ideas. Director of football Bert van Oostveen told the press on Friday:

“We are delighted to have come to an agreement. We were looking for a coach with a lot of experience and with personal and professional charisma.

“Van Gaal has left his mark nationally and internationally and we know him as a dedicated and very motivated coach.”

Following his appointment, Louis Van Gaal issued the following statement:

“I am happy that the KNVB has approached me. This is the challenge I have been waiting for.”

The former Ajax, Barcelona, AZ and Bayern Munich coach managed the Oranje between 2000 and 2002. Louis Van Gaal could not guide the Netherlands to the 2002 FIFA World Cup. This failure cost him his job.

The Netherlands’ next target is to reach the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
