Bundesliga round-up: Bayern's surprise result gives opportunity for others to catch up

October 4, 2021 By Michelle Bonsu
The league leaders slumped to a surprise 2-1 reversal to Eintracht Frankfurt, which has seen things get a bit more interesting in the table.

Bayern have been largely unstoppable all season, but given that no Bundesliga team have ever completed a campaign sans defeat, die Roten were bound to slip up at one point. And no, we're not talking about their surprise opening day draw with Gladbach, although that result wasn't what many had expected.

Here's all you need to know following this weekend's Bundesliga action.

Top five teams in the Bundesliga up to October 4

Top Bundesliga headlines, stats, and other facts

Bayern suffer shock loss: Bayern ended up losing 2-1 to Eintracht Frankfurt over the weekend in a result that certainly no one saw coming. For starters, die Roten had taken a lead, and more often than not, when they go in front, they stay there. In addition, die Adler have been hardly soaring this season, and prior to that game, had not won a single match all season. Filip Kostic's late goal was enough to help the struggling side clinch a boosting win - and now everyone will be curious to see if they can use that as a springboard to turn their fortunes around.

Leverkusen pull level: Die Werkself have been quietly picking up points all season, and now, thanks to a stunning 4-0 win over Arminia Bielefeld, have now moved into second spot. Tied on 16 points with Bayern Munich, they'll face the reigning champs after the international break in a game that should be an entertaining one from start to finish.

Top Bundesliga matches: October 15 - October 17, 2021

Bundesliga fans will have to wait a bit longer to see their favorite players and teams in action due to yet another international break coming up. However, once that's all over, the show will be back on the road, and here are some games you won't want to miss:

Dormund vs Mainz: Mainz started off decently enough, but now are in a slump, with just one point from their last three games. Will die Schwarzgelben, who have lost just one of their last five games, be able to take advantage of this to close the gap? Ahead of Marco Rose's side are Leverkusen and Bayern, with one - or both - teams set to drop points in this upcoming round, meaning that Dortmund, who sit one point behind, could break into the top two.

Freiburg vs RB Leipzig: After a wobbly start, Leipzig have seemingly finally turned a corner, but Jesse Marsch's men may face a stern test in their upcoming match. Freiburg are having their best ever start to a season in club history, and will come into this tie sitting in a very impressive fourth place. In addition, Christian Streich's troops are presently the only team who have yet to lose a game this season.

Bayer Leverkusen vs Bayern Munich: This arguably will be the game not to miss! For starters, both Leverkusen and Bayern are tied on points, meaning that die Werkself, who have been in fantastic form all season, could dislodge the Bavarian titans from top spot if things go their way.
