The Spanish giants succumbed against the debutant team despite taking 31 shots against Greek goalie Giorgios Athanasiadis.

The 2021-22 UEFA Champions League season has given fans quite a few surprises, but today's result may be the shock of all shocks. FC Sheriff Tiraspol, a team making their debut in the tournament, were able to shock the world by beating none other than the most winning team in UCL history: Real Madrid.

The Moldovan side claimed the lead during the first half thanks to a well-placed header by Jasurbek Yakhshiboev, and while Karim Benzema leveled the game, a stunning left-footed shot by Sebastien Thill in the last moments of the game saw the minnows making history at the sacred grounds of Santiago Bernabeu Stadium.

The fact that goalkeeper Giorgios Athanasiadis held his ground after 31 shots by Los Blancos is truly a testament of this team's resilience. Added to that, their accuracy in front of goal was really stunning, as all of their three shots on goal ended up in the back of the net, but only two counted after one was disallowed by VAR officers.

The Moldovan side will now go on to face Inter on October 19 at Giuseppe Meazza Stadium, where they will try to defend their current first place in Group D. Meanwhile, Los Blancos will try to go back to winning ways when they travel to Ukraine, where Shakhtar Donetsk will aim to win their first match of the campaign.
