Premier League Round-up after Sept. 27 games

Premier League Round-up: Liverpool top the league after rivals' slip-ups

September 28, 2021 By Oscar Rojas
Despite not being able to beat Brentford, Klopp's team is now the leader in the English top-flight after six games.

The top football category in England gave fans quite a few thrills this weekend, which left a new leader and a new configuration of the top five teams in the tournament. Added to that, this weekend saw Manchester United losing their unbeaten run in the competition thanks to a last-minute penalty miss by Bruno Fernandes.

The weekend kicked off with Manchester City's win over Chelsea, while one of the defining moments of this matchday came when Arsenal took home all the points from the North London Derby. To top it all, the exciting draw between Brentford and Liverpool saw Mohamed Salah extend his legacy as one of the top scorers in team history.

Without further ado, here are the main talking points after Matchday 6 in the Premier League.

Who are the top five Premier League teams after Matchday 6?

As mentioned before, Liverpool now have the top spot all to themselves after their draw against Brentford, but Manchester City, Chelsea, Manchester United and Everton are only one point behind the Reds. Monday's draw between Brighton and Crystal Palace opened the gates of the top five teams for the Toffees.

Premier League top 3 scorers

West Ham striker Michail Antonio has prevailed as one of the best scorers in the league, but he is now level with Mohamed Salah and Jamie Vardy, all with five goals. Curiously, Vardy scored three goals this weekend, but one of those was an own goal that limited Leicester to a draw against Burnley.

Premier League – Top headlines

  • Salah reaches 100th Premier League goal for Liverpool - The Egyptian star is now part of an elite list of players who have found the back of the net for Liverpool, a feat he accomplished with his goal against Brentford. He needs 19 more goals to leapfrog Michael Owen and Kenny Dalgish, who scored 118 league goals for the Reds

  • Emiliano Martínez's penalty kick antics force Bruno Fernandes' miss - Manchester United seemed ready to draw their game against Aston Villa when a PK was awarded to them in the dying seconds of the match...until goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez showed up. First, he demanded Cristiano Ronaldo to take the shot, but being Bruno Fernandes the official spot-kick taker, he stepped up to hear Martínez's taunts. Eventually, Fernandes sent his shot over the bar and Martínez celebrated the miss with a little dance that was may not have been as funny to Red Devils' supporters.

  • Arsenal end Tottenham's year-long "dominance" - The Gunners have not been precisely accurate in front of goal and able to get results, but after a dubious start of the season, Arteta's men seem to be ready to climb back up in the standings. Simply put, the Gunners have finally been able to finish a matchday above Tottenham in the EPL standings for the first time since October 2020. Is this a sign of things to come in the ongoing season?

Top matches to watch in the Premier League on October 2-3, 2021

Manchester United vs Everton: The clash between two of the top five teams in the league will be quite entertaining to watch. If that was not enough reason to get you interested in watching the game, how about a reunion between CR7 and Rafa Benítez, one of the coaches who did not get along with the Portuguese ace during his time at Real Madrid?

Chelsea vs Southampton: The European champions will be keen on going back to winning ways when they host Southampton this weekend, although that might be easier said than done. The Saints are yet to win a game this season, and beating the Blues to help their case would be ideal to their options to avoid relegation.

Liverpool vs Manchester City: The best game of the weekend was saved for last, and one more chapter of the rivalry between Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola could end up handing the top spot of the league if either one of these teams claim the win. The best attack in the EPL will face the best defensive unit of the league, and we can hardly wait to watch such an interesting game.
