The San Siro is preparing to host its first UEFA Champions League clash since 2014 in what should be an exciting showdown with Atletico Madrid in Matchday 2.

Preview

The UEFA Champions League is back in action! Round 2 of the 2021/22 group stage kicks off this midweek, with one of the most exciting fixtures set to take place on Tuesday. That game is none other than AC Milan vs Atletico Madrid as the Italian giants go in search of their first win of the season.

This will be the first Champions League game to be held at the San Siro since 2014, meaning a special atmosphere is expected when Los Rojiblancos turn up in Milan. The Rossoneri marked their return to Europe's premier club competition two weeks ago, taking on Liverpool in the opening round in what turned out to be another thrilling showdown between these two outfits.

Pioli's men found themselves 1-0 down inside the first 10 minutes thanks to a Tomori own goal but right before the half-time whistle, AC Milan managed to score two goals in two minutes to turn this game on its head in the blink of an eye. Unfortunately, Kessie and Co. were unable to hold onto their lead, with Liverpool responding to AC Milan's comeback by pulling off a comeback of their own, losing 3-2 in the end thanks to goals from Mohamed Salah and Jordan Henderson.

Despite that unfortunate start to their European campaign, the Rossoneri have been nothing short of excellent in the Italian top-flight. Pioli's men are currently second in the table and have begun their mission to dethrone Inter Milan as the champions with five wins and a draw – Juventus are the only side so far to pick up a point against AC Milan this term.

Atletico's fortunes, on the other hand, have not been as great from the get-go. The Spanish champions, unlike their opponents, did pick up a point in their opening UCL game but given that it was a goalless draw against Porto, that result was seen as a disappointment from Simeone's side.

In La Liga, the defending champions have managed only four wins from their opening seven games and while they are in fourth, only three points behind league leaders Real Madrid, there have been some worrying performances from Suarez and Co.

The Madrid giants have managed only one victory in their last four outing and that sole triumph was the 2-1 win over 10-man Getafe, a result secured by a stoppage-time goal from Suarez. Their most recent outing saw Los Rojiblancos lose 1-0 against Alaves. Will they bounce back at the San Siro? Tune in to find out!

Team news

AC Milan: Pioli looks to be without the services of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but Olivier Giroud is back and fit ahead of this crucial tie. Davide Calabria is also in contention while Simon Kjaer is facing a race against time to be available. Bakayoko and Florenzi are out, however.

Atletico: Thomas Lemar is Simeone's only injury concern. Jose Gimenez and Joao Felix, who both sat out the recent defeat to Alaves, look set to return to the lineup.

Key stats

  • AC Milan boast a 100 percent record at home so far, winning all three games they've played at the San Siro, scoring eight while conceding only once.

  • However, the Rossoneri have won only once in their last 17 encounters with Spanish clubs.

  • Atletico have failed to score a goal in their last three UCL fixtures.

  • The Milan giants look to win their first UCL game since their 3-0 triumph over Celtic in November 2013.
