Ole blames Bruno's penalty miss on Villa players

Solskjaer blames Bruno Fernandes' penalty miss on Aston Villa players

September 25, 2021 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
The Manchester United manager faulted the opposition players for playing a role in his side's missed spot-kick.

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had a lot to complain about following his side's surprise defeat to Aston Villa on Saturday after. The Norwegian coach claimed that the actions of the Villa players was the reason why Bruno Fernandes missed the late spot-kick that could have tied the game at one-all for the Red Devils in the disappointing 1-0 loss.

In a game in which United barely turned up nor took their chances, Kortney Hause's 88th-minute header proved to be the decider as the Villans grabbed their first win at Old Trafford since 2009. However, the tale could have been different had Bruno Fernandes done justice to the opportunity to level the scoreline through the penalty kick awarded as a result of a handball infringement by the visitor's goalscorer. Instead, the Portuguese playmaker fired the ball straight over the bar to deny his side a point after being taunted by the opposition players prior to taking the kick.

Speaking to Sky Sport after the game, Ole said: "I wasn't going to mention it but it's not right that they do that. I guess that should be a yellow card for someone but they have achieved what they wanted.

"First of all the way they get round the penalty spot, get round Bruno and that, that's not to my liking. Bruno is usually very good in those positions and unfortunately he missed this one."

Earlier, the United boss had stated that Villa's opener should not have stood. He claimed that Hause's effort was not only offside but also a foul.

"You can take it when it's a good goal conceded against you, but that's offside," he said. He's touched David [De Gea] as he heads the ball. How that's a goal and Leicester have not got their goals, I just can't see the consistency and that's clearly offside."

With the defeat, Manchester United were demoted to fourth place on the league table although both Liverpool and Chelsea failed to pick up wins in their respective outings. The Red Devils have now suffered three defeats in their last four appearances across all competitions. They host Villarreal in the Champions League on Wednesday and aim to avoid what would be a fourth defeat in five successive matches.
