Pep makes Man City history with win vs Chelsea

Record breaker: Pep Guardiola makes Man City history with 1-0 win over Chelsea

September 25, 2021 By Ali M.
The Spaniard set an incredible milestone in the thrilling 1-0 victory at Stamford Bridge over Tuchel's side.

Matchweek 6 in the Premier League kicked off with an exciting showdown between Chelsea and Man City, with the Cityzens aiming to beat their bitter title rivals after suffering three consecutive defeats at the hands of the Blues. Fans eagerly awaited this Stamford Bridge showdown and fortunately, we were treated to an excellent game of football.

The defending champions were undoubtedly the dominant side in the first half, with Tuchel's men struggling to progress the ball down the middle. However, Chelsea's rock-solid defense kept things 0-0 until the break, with City failing to break the deadlock in the first 45 minutes.

However, this changed in the second half. De Bruyne and Co. came knocking several times only to find the breakthrough shortly before the hour mark, with Gabriel Jesus profiting from a fortunate deflection to put the visitors 1-0 up. From then on, Chelsea were forced to attack, thus opening up the game for a brilliant half-an-hour.

Chances came left, right, and center, with Man City in particular missing several opportunities to kill off the game. As a result, they were forced to defend their one-goal lead until the final whistle, setting up a nervy final minutes. However, Ruben Dias led his back four to a clean sheet and the three points, seeing out a 1-0 win at the Bridge.

This result was a remarkable one for the Cityzens for several reasons. Not only did it bring an end to Guardiola's losing streak against Tuchel, but it also saw the defending champions bounce back from last weekend's 0-0 draw to pull level with the Blues in the standings.

Furthermore, that triumph also saw Pep make history at the Etihad Stadium. That victory, his 221st triumph in all competitions since taking over the Manchester outfit, makes him the manager with the most wins in the club's history, overtaking the previous record holder Les McDowall (220 wins).

While this is a lovely feat, the Spaniard cannot spend anytime dwelling on this achievement as the focus must quickly shift to their midweek game. The English giants will resume their UEFA Champions League campaign on Tuesday, with Guardiola's side set to make the trip to Paris for their highly-anticipated clash with PSG.
