Barca president makes worrying claim about Koeman

Barca president offers bleak insight into Koeman's future after controversial press conference

September 23, 2021 By Ali M.
The Blaugrana boss definitely looks to be running out of time!

Ronald Koeman has been dominating the headlines in recent weeks but for all the wrong reasons. After a disappointing start to the campaign, the Barcelona's head coach's future has come under serious doubts, with several news outlet predicting he is on the brink of being sacked.

The Dutchman's pre-match press conference for Thursday's clash with Cadiz hinted that he's on borrowed time. Instead of sitting down and taking questions from the media as usual, the Blaugrana boss opted to simply read a pre-written statement calling for patience and support from the fans before cutting his press conference short and walking out.

This move caught everyone's attention, with Barcelona president Joan Laporta later being asked about the situation. The Camp Nou commander-in-chief confirmed what many had been speculating: this was a decision made by Koeman that was only communicated to the higher-ups at the eleventh hour.

"We found out at the last minute that he wanted to make a statement and, well, he's obliged to attend press conferences and he's free to respond or speak as he wishes," Laporta said, as per Marca.

"We respect the coach's decision, but we and the captains found out a bit before."

However, that wasn't the only interesting remark Laporta had to make. He was asked by a reporter whether his patience was limited, or in other words, whether it is growing thin, to which the Barca president replied: Yes, of course". Check out the conversation as posted by El Chiringuito TV (the dialogue is in Spanish).

One might wonder why Koeman's job is under threat given that the Catalan giants are unbeaten in La Liga, but it's crucial to point out that his side have won only twice in their opening two fixtures. The embarrassing 3-0 loss and last-gasp 1-1 draw at home to Bayern Munich and Granada respectively are the catalyst behind what looks to be his inevitable depature.
