Last weekend, super sub Karim Ait Fana virtually won the title for Montpellier when he broke Lille’s defence in the 90th minute of the match. The hosts were arguably not the better side as they gathered only 37 per cent of ball possession. However, they did what matters most to win a game: to score.

The French Ligue 1 title race is well over for Lille. No matter what happens on Matchday 38 of the championship, the reigning champions will finish third in the table. Lille are currently 7 points above fourth-placed Olympique Lyonnais and 5 points behind Paris-Saint Germain.

The latter recorded a straightforward victory last weekend by beating Stade Rennes 3-0. In-form Nene was on target thrice. A hat-trick in the space of 18 minutes kept PSG’s slim hopes of denying Montpellier from French Ligue 1 glory.

Matchday 38

Paris Saint-Germain and Montpellier have the same amount of goal difference but PSG lack 3 points behind the league leaders. This means that Carlo Ancelotti's men must beat Lorient on Matchday 38 and hope Montpellier lose to AJ Auxerre.

Montpellier are favourites to become French champions as a draw would do whereas AJ Auxerre can only play for pride. With 34 points, they sit at the very bottom of the table. Already-relegated Auxerre are 4 points off the safe zone.
