Brazil vs Peru and all the CONMEBOL World Cup qualifiers to watch on Sept 9, 2021

September 8, 2021 By Emmanuel K. Budu-Annor
Having had their clash with Argentina suspended indefinitely, Brazil will welcome Peru in their next qualifying game as they look to consolidate their lead atop the table.

The last round of matches in the CONMEBOL World Cup qualifiers came with its own twists and turns with the clash between Brazil and Argentina stealing all the headlines for obvious reason. The much-anticipated encounter could not ensued as scheduled after health officials stormed the Neo Quimica Arena in Sao Paulo to deport four Argentine players who were reportedly present at the arena illegally.

With the scrimmage running what should have been an entertaining encounter, the game was ultimately suspended by CONMEBOL. Meanwhile, no issues were recorded at the other match centers with Uruguay and Peru securing wins in their respective fixtures while Colombia and Chile shared spoils against Paraguay and Ecuador respectively.

The CONMEBOL World Cup qualifiers standings ahead of Thursday's fixtures

Top games to watch

Uruguay vs Ecuador: Uruguay will host Ecuador at Montevido on Thursday as they look to improve their World Cup Qualifying chances. On Sunday, La Celeste easily overcame Bolivia to close the gap on Thursday's visitors, who drew 0-0 with Chile to cling to third place in the qualifying group. The latter secured a 4-2 win over the Uruguayans who will now be keen to build consistency with a second straight victory. A win would see them leapfrog their opponents and significantly boost their qualification chances.

Colombia vs Chile: Colombia and Chile face off in Barranquilla on Thursday, with only three points separating the two teams in CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying. Although they are in ninth place, Chile will move ahead of their fifth-placed opponents if they win, thanks to a significantly better goal differential.

Brazil vs Peru: Following the postponement of their match against Argentina on Sunday, Brazil will play Peru in World Cup Qualifying on Thursday. The teams last played in the Copa America semi-finals this summer, with the hosts coming out on top, and they will try to maintain their lead in the qualifying group with a similar victory on home soil.
