The USMNT will hope to finally get the ball rolling following their poor start to life in the World Cup qualifiers.

Preview

Honduras and the United States will both be looking for their first win in the third round of the 2022 World Cup qualifying campaign when they meet on Wednesday at the Olimpico Metropolitano in San Pedro. The teams have registered two draws so far, having lost one-goal leads to tie Canada, while none of them was able to beat El Salvador.

For Honduras, the result has seen they occupy an unfamiliar position and will now look to fight their way back from fourth position. By all means, they will hope to avoid what happened in them in the build-up to the 2018 edition of the World Cup in Russia where a series of bad results led to their non-participation. Back then, they conceded 19 goals in the whole campaign, six of which came in a single game against the USMNT. A single win from their final qualifying round as well as a play-off defeat to Australia ultimately ruled them out of contention.

Fast-forward to now, Fabian Coito's men could take inspiration from the fact that they are unbeaten in their first two qualifying games. Returning to their national stadium, the Olimpico Metropolitano, should also come with a good omen as they have not lost at the venue since November 2016 and have not conceded a goal since their 3-2 win over Mexico in a qualifying fixture in October 2017.

While things could be promising for Los Catrachos, the USMNT will equally come into the encounter poised to make a difference. With just two points to their name, the Stars and Stripes may want to save themselves from any late upsets as the qualifying round gradually takes shape. For the first time since 2019, they have gone two games without recording a win.

Prior to the draws with Canada and El Salvador, they had picked up 10 successive victories, winning the CONCACAF Nations League and the Gold Cup during the same period. Evidently, Gregg Berhalter have fallen short of expectations and the fact that they sit in fifth place reinforces this. Needless to say, they should not be short of confidence as they have won all but two of their last eight meetings with Honduras.
