After a surprise draw with Bulgaria, Italy will look to get back to winning ways as they take on Switzerland.

Preview: Switzerland vs Italy

Switzerland, who surprised everyone by knocking EURO 2020 tournament favorites France out of this summer's competition, will be hoping to spring another major surprise when they host EURO 2020 winners Italy on Sunday, September 5th. La Nati come into this match presently on six points, however, they've played fewer matches than any of the other teams in the table.

This will be Switzerland's first World Cup 2022 qualifying match since the round-robin games resumed action earlier this month, and they warmed up for the visit of Italy with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Greece in their first game under new manager Murat Yakin. The retired defender, who is of Turkish descent but was born and raised in Switzerland, made nearly 50 appearances for the Swiss side and featured at EURO 2004.

However, that result for their new boss came at a high price, as the hosts will be missing quite a few players due to injuries and COVID-19. It couldn't come at a more difficult time especially as Italy will be determined to get back on track after their shocking draw to Bulgaria. Despite outshooting their opponents 27 to four, Roberto Mancini's men were unable to break down the stubborn defensive Eastern European minnows and now will look to take advantage of a Swiss side who have been really hit hard by illness and injuries.

Switzerland will be desperate to get revenge following their humiliating 3-0 loss to Italy during the group stage of EURO 2020, but that obviously will be easier said than done. Despite Italy's disappointing showing against Bulgaria, the fact remains that La Nati will have to field a weaker squad than they'd wanted, and all signs point to the visitors getting the better of them once again on Sunday evening.

Team news: Switzerland vs Italy

Switzerland: Skipper Granit Xhaka has tested positive for COVID-19, so won't be featuring here. In addition, Xherdan Shaqiri, Breel Embolo, Kevin Mbabu, Eray Comert and Loris Benito have all left the camp due to injuries, thus leaving Murat Yakin with some major selection concerns ahead of this contest.

Italy: The Azzurri will be missing Andrea Belotti, Alex Meret, and Manuel Lazzarri due to injury, but have been given a huge boost with newly-signed Juventus midfielder Manuel Locatelli returning to the squad after suspension.
