The meeting between Nice and Marseille was abandon after fans stormed the pitch in retaliation to Payet's reaction.

Sunday's Ligue 1 clash between OGC Nice and Marseille was marred by chaotic scenes and ended abruptly after Dmitri Payet was struck by a bottle suspected to have been thrown by a member of the OGC Nice ultras. In retaliation to the incident, the 34-year-old threw thr bottle back into the crowd, sparking an outrage with ended with ultras storming the pitch.

Prior to the fracas, the Nice were on course to securing the maximum three points as it had not been long after Danish striker Kasper Dolberg had put them in front in the second half. However hell broke loose moments later when Payet moved to take a corner and had a bottle being thrown at his back. Having been subjected to the treatment all-game long, the former West Ham playmaker picked the object and threw it back at the ultras behind him.

Angered by the player's action, a section of the fans descended onto the pitch, causing the game to be paused in the 75th minute. Things escalated quickly as the stewards inside the arena had a hard time containing the crowing crowd. Watch the incident below:

In the end the Marseille players decided against continuing the match, leading to its suspension by the match referee. Due to the visitor's forfiture, Nice are expected to be awarded three points and three goals although sanctions are expected to follow for all the parties involved in the coming days.

Meanwhile, reports from France suggested that three players from the Marseille side have sustained wounds due to the brawl. A fan was also reportedly rushed to the hospital after picking up an injury in the stampede.
