Germany's two top dogs are set to battle it out in the German Super Cup. Who will walk away from the Westfalenstadion with this title? Here's a preview of Tuesday's clash.

Preview

Der Klassiker is upon us! The always-exciting Dortmund vs Bayern Munich rivalry is set to be renewed on Tuesday, with the two German giants gearing up for a highly-anticipated showdown in the DFL-Supercup at 2:30 p.m. ET at the Westfalenstadion.

While the 2021/22 Bundesliga has already kicked off, this fixture will act as a curtain-raiser nonetheless as only the opening round in the German top-flight has been held. Winning this tie, and the German Super Cup, will be ideal for both teams in their pursuit of the Bundesliga title, as Haaland and Co. look to avenge last season's defeat against the Bavarians.

The 2020 edition of the DFL-Supercup saw these two heavyweights face off for the title, but unfortunately for BVB, the spoils went to Lewandowski and Co, then coached by Hansi Flick. German midfielder Joshua Kimmich scored the 82nd-minute winning goal, and thus being awarded Man of the Match, as the Bundesliga champions marched to a 3-2 triumph over their bitter rivals.

However, a lot has changed since then. Jadon Sancho has now gone off to Man United, getting his dream move to Old Trafford over the summer after a prolonged transfer saga, while both teams have new coaches at their helms. Marco Rose is in charge at the Signal Iduna Park while Julian Nagelsmann has taken over at the Allianz Arena.

Despite arriving with high expectations, Nagelsmann has not gotten off to a great start. Die Roten failed to win any of their pre-season fixtures and kicked off their 2021/22 Bundesliga title defense with a 1-1 draw with Borussia M'gladbach. The Bavarians are reeling from the recent passing away of Gerd Muller; a Bayern Munich, German, and footballing icon; and would look to pay tribute to the record-breaking striker by lifting the title in his name.

Can they pull that off? Dortmund are in sensational form, as is Haaland, with the club triumphing 5-2 over Frankfurt on Matchday 1, and will thus have something to say about that. The Norwegian superstar got a brace on that day while assisting another two goals. Do not miss their clash with their Der Klassiker rivals on Tuesday.

Team news

Dortmund: Mateu Morey and Dan-Axel Zagadou are yet to return from their long-term injuries. Unfortunately, they are not the only absentees for the home side as Julian Brandt and Thomas Meunier are unavailable after contracting COVID-19. Raphael Guerreiro and Mats Hummels have also picked up injuries and could thus miss this fixture, handing Marco Rose a huge blow in defense, while Emre Can remains a doubt.

Bayern Munich: Benjamin Pavard picked up an ankle injury right before the Bundesliga kicked off and is set to be sidelined for a month. Furthermore, Lucas Hernandez and Marc Roca are doubts for this fixture.

Key stats

  • This will be the ninth DFL-Supercup clash between these two sides.

  • The head-to-head record in this competition is evenly split, with both teams winning on four occasions.

  • However, Bayern Munich boast the superior head-to-head record in recent encounters across all competitions, winning all of their last five run-ins.
