Sporting Braga vs Academica de Coimbra

It’s been four months since they have lost or drawn a match for the Portuguese Liga Zon/Sagres. They’ve been defeated in Estádio do Dragão home to FC Porto. Until a week ago, only Real Madrid matched this amazing record of eleven wins in a row.

This Monday March 26, SC Braga meets Académica de Coimbra at Estádio Axa, also called “the quarry”. It’s always a hard task to play Académica. However, if they manage to beat the "Students" next Monday, they will take over second place in the league. In those conditions, they’ll meet Benfica with a two point advantage next week.

Over the last years, SC Braga has been showing important signs of development. The team is stronger and stronger, season after season. So far SC Braga has been the outsider but now they’ve shown that they can cope with the three major teams in Portugal when it comes to title challenge. Maybe it’s time to take them seriously.

Due to consistency, SC Braga are managing to stay at the top of the Portuguese Liga. Although, Braga’s coach Leonardo Jardim keeps telling the press “Braga is not a title contender”, the results tell otherwise. In fact, even players insist on proving him wrong.

Despite the great season, SC Braga lost their last game home to Gil Vicente FC on Thursday March 22. They failed to reach the Portuguese League Cup Final losing on penalties. It was a massive blow on the club goals but they’ll try to return to winning ways.

Twelveth-placed Académica de Coimbra is trying hard to avoid relegation. Académica’s Students’ coach is a former FC Porto and Boavista FC Portuguese international Pedro Emanuel who told the reporters that “any point is gold”. They’re only five points above water and one point suits their needs.

There’s only one player unavailable for this match. Central Defender Abdoulaye Ba from Académica is banned for one match. Abdoulaye Ba has seen four red cards this season.
