Canada will be hoping to win the Olympic gold medal for the first time, but will have to find a way past a stubbornly determined Sweden side looking for the same thing.

Preview: Sweden vs Canada

An interesting clash awaits as Canada and Sweden lock horns in this summer's Olympic women's football final. Whoever wins this will earn a gold medal for the first time, and as such, there's much at stake. Both Canada and Sweden notably defeated the United States to get to this juncture, with the Scandinavians recording a shock 3-0 victory on matchday one, while Canada successfully powered past the world's number 1 women's team during the semi-finals.

For Canada, who picked up back to back bronze medals during the 2012 and 2016 iterations of this competition, this moment has been a long time coming. Their win over the Stars and Stripes finally ended a long-standing frustrating hoodoo they'd experienced against their southern neighbors, and now, Bev Priestman's squad are just 90 minutes (or more) away from finally getting their hands on the coveted prize. Canada haven't dazzled in terms of goals scored, but they've been quite solid defensively. They successfully navigated through the group stages undefeated, picking up draws against hosts Japan and Great Britain and securing a hard-fought 2-1 win over Chile.

Surviving a nervy shoot-out against Brazil is no easy feat, but Canada handled it well, especially after the scores were tied at three-all after the first four penalties, meaning that the last one converted could end the contest. But they saved their toughest performance for the United States, beating them 1-0 via a penalty and hunkering down defensively to book their ticket to this juncture.

Sweden, meanwhile have been seemingly scoring goals for fun. They've racked up 13 goals so far, with nine of those coming in the group stages as they easily topped their group by five point. It's been a commanding showing from Peter Gerhardsson's side who've won all five of their games so far. That includes the aforementioned 3-0 thrashing of the United States, widely viewed by most as the major favorites to win gold this summer. In addition, the Scandinavians, who will be hoping to win gold after earning a silver medal five years ago in Brazil, swatted aside 2011 World Cup winners Japan in the quarter-finals before grinding out a tough 1-0 win over Australia.

All in all, no one could say that neither Canada nor Sweden deserve to be in this summer's final. Unfortunately, only one side can win gold, while the other will have to settle for silver. Who will it be?
