Tottenham is no longer part of the Premier League title race. They are slowly getting pulled down towards fourth place.
Four points is all that separates Spurs from their bitter North London rivals Arsenal. Spurs was the talk of the Premiere League for much of the season but is starting to fall away at the most vital point of the season- where every win almost counts double. Two drubbings in the hands of Arsenal and Manchester United respectively have left Harry Redcap’s crew writhing in agony.

While losing to United is no anomaly for Spurs, losing in the fashion they did especially at home was rather shameful. The bruises Spurs suffered from the London derby will not be forgotten soon, especially considering they squandered a 0-2 lead. As we all know by now, Champions do not squander 0-2 leads.

Perhaps, the vacancy in the national team is occupying Harry Redknapp’s mind. Perhaps Jamie Redknapp’s commentary isn’t pleasing to hear these days. Redknapp, at-least considering his team’s recent performances has somewhat lost the plot. The gap between them and United is currently 11 points and that between them and City is 13 points.

With little over two months to go, Spurs will perhaps be more concerned about holding on to third spot- after all it is Arsenal and Chelsea, two seasoned top four clubs chasing them. If Spurs does sink out of the top four, the turn of events might actually not turn out to be too surprising- and no, that is not because this season has been the strangest one the Premier League has experienced in the past seven years.

Spurs is known to be a ‘choker’. They seemed to be leaving that reputation behind them this season. They crushed Liverpool and beat Arsenal early on in the season to prove the critics and doubters wrong. However, the confidence of a team is severely tested at this time of the season. And Spurs’ confidence is proving to be fragile.

Plenty of fans and pundits predicted a Spurs breakdown but the signs were not really present prior to January. The loss to City was where the signs of a breakdown were starting to show. Champions often have luck on their side- Spurs did not.

The draw against Liverpool showed Spurs’ mettle. They defended well but could not hit the back of the net themselves. Gareth Bale was presented with a golden opportunity in the closing stages of that match. Yet, he failed to beat the keeper.

A thrashing of Newcastle brought the team back on track. The last two defeats ensured that that big win has become a memory rather quickly. Tottenham next takes on Everton in the Premier League. While their upcoming fixture list isn’t too difficult, it isn’t the easiest one either- Chelsea, Fulham, Aston Villa, Sunderland and Stoke are some of the teams that Spurs must play.

Crash! - Tottenham has been brought back down to Earth. There is nothing to panic about just yet though. If Spurs loses two matches in the next five fixtures or so, expect those alarm bells to start ringing and get louder and louder as the season approaches its end.
