The South Americans will be looking to bounce back after losing their opening game 2-0 to Australia.

Preview

Matchday 2 in the Men's Olympic Football Tournament is upon us, with Argentina preparing for an interesting encounter with Egypt in Group C. These South American and African powerhouses will lock horns at the Sapporo Dome at 3:30 a.m. in the wake of their shocking results in the opening round.

The Argentine senior team won the 2021 Copa America but their U23 representatives at Tokyo 2020 got off to an abysmal start in their search for the gold medal. Fernando Batista's side took on Australia in their opening game and despite being one of the tournament favorites, the two-time champions were beaten 2-0.

Lachlan Wales broke the deadlock, leaving Argentina trailing early on in their fixture. Francisco Ortega crippled the South Americans' hopes of a comeback as he was sent off after picking up two yellow cards in quick succession shortly before half time. Being a man down was a hill too steep to overcome as Marco Tilio scored Australia's second goal of the game in the second half, thus condemning Mac Allister and Co. to a disappointing defeat.

La Albiceleste entered this tournament on the back of excellent form and will thus fancy their odds of turning things around. Not only did they win the 2020 CONMEBOL Pre-Olympic Tournament, beating the likes of Brazil and Colombia to the prize, but they also won their three preparatory fixtures, beating Japan, Denmark, and Saudi Arabia.

Egypt, on the other hand, head into this tie on the back of a draw. The North African giants took on Spain, another favorite for the gold medal, and came away with a point after holding the Europeans to a goalless stalemate. Can the Pharaohs pull off another upset? Tune in to find out.

Team news

Egypt: Mohamed El Shenawy, Ahmed Hegazi and Mahmoud Hamdi are the Pharaohs three over-aged players, will all three featuring against Spain. The same is expected on Sunday, with Ahmed Yasser Rayan being a key candidate for the attack.

Argentina: Franciso Ortega is out for this game after being sent off in the previous match. In his absence, Marcelo Herrera will likely fill the void. Ezequiel Ponce and Pedro de la Vega will be hoping for a start after Argentina failed to score against Australia.
