El Tri need to earn all the points in this game to avoid more problems in their quest to win the group. Follow their clash against Los Chapines.

Guatemala and Mexico will lock horns tonight in what should be an entertaining CONCACAF Gold Cup game. Both teams will be in need of a victory to keep their hopes for success alive, although Mexico seems to have an edge over their neighbors in terms of quality and pedigree in the tournament.

Guatemala got to this competition after Curazao dropped out after seven members of their squad tested positive for COVID-19. With barely enough time to travel to the competition, Los Chapines lost their first game to El Salvador, leaving them in a complicated position to reach the knockout stage.

On the other hand, Mexico was not able to overcome the absence of Hirving Lozano and ended up drawing their first game 0-0 against Trinidad & Tobago. Gerardo Martino's men will be aiming to win their first match of the competition and help their fans both at the stadiums and at home calm.

Due to time constraints caused by the team's invitation to play the Gold Cup, some of the most talented players in Guatemala were not able to attend the competition. Hence, La Furia Azul had to call up some young, up and coming players, such as John Méndez (four apps, one goal) and Oscar Santis (five apps, one goal). The weight of the team will be carried by striker Jairo Arreola (29 apps, one goal) and midfielder Marvin Ceballos (24 apps, six goals for Los Chapines). José Morales and Jorge Aparicio are listed as doubtful after being subbed off with muscular problems during their game against El Salvador.

Mexico will also have to deal with a couple of absences, as Hirving Lozano has been ruled out of the tournament after that nasty shove by Alvin Jones in their match against Trinidad & Tobago, which forced "Chucky" to undergo a surgery that required 40 stitches to his head. Added to that, defender Carlos Salcido will not be around after picking up a muscular injury in the game against the Trinidadians. His void will be filled by former Roma and Espanyol footballer Héctor Moreno.

The rivalry between Guatemala and Mexico will live its 30th game. Out of those, Mexico has been able to claim 18 wins, with eight draws, and only three wins for the Guatemalan side. Speaking of CONCACAF Gold Cup games, El Tri and La Furia Azul have played six matches in the competition, with four of those going Mexico's way and two draws. The last clash between these national teams in this tournament ended in a goalless drawn in the 2015 edition, the only time in which Mexico has not been able to score against them in this competition.
