Manchester United have been hit with a blow ahead of the new season with Marcus Rashford set to undergo a surgery in the coming weeks. The 23-year-old forward will reportedly miss the first seven weeks of the season after he goes under the knife to for a niggling shoulder problem to be fixed.
Despite being one of the most instrumental pieces at Manchester United set up in recent years, Rashford had a campaign to forget last season. For most part of the Red Devils' charge in the Premier League as well as in Europe, the former academy star failed to impress by the standard he is known for. His season was characterized by ineficiency in front of goal, leading to numerous criticisms from fans. In the 57 appearances he made, the English attacker registered 21 goals, completing the season with another injury relapse.
However, that did not deter him fron featuring from the Three Lions at the just-ended European Championship. At the finals, the Manchester native was sparringly used by national team boss Gareth Southgate, dropping cameo appearances right from the group stage to the grand-finale which was won by Italy via penalty hoot-out at the expense of his side.
In the course of last season, Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer revealed that Rashford will require a surgery to fix the should problem that has affected his game since November 2020. According to UK news outlet the Telegraph, the striker is poised to undergo the surgery in the coming days amid growing concerns about its lasting impact on his movement. An ankle problem may also be looked at at the same time.
The player's expected return is around the ending of September and with United having a number of tough fixture in October, his re-introduction may be just perfect. In the meantime, his compartiot Jadon Sancho is expected to occupy his vacant slot on either of the left and right wings following his signing from Borussia Dortmund.
